I predict Hastert and OTHER heads will ROLL next week - the heat IS ON...
I'm predicting that NEXT week will be heavy duty, that Hastert will step down, and OTHER heads will roll as well:

Here's some of the reasons why:

Number 1:

*************

TPM: Hastert's Chief of Staff Is In A Heap of Trouble (Scott Palmer)

Remember that Kirk Fordham, one-time Chief of Staff to Mark Foley (R-FL), resigned Wednesday as Rep. Tom Reynolds' (R-NY) Chief of Staff and promptly announced that he had warned Hastert's staff about Foley's page problem as far back and 2003. Specifically, he said he repeatedly asked Hastert's Chief of Staff, Scott Palmer, to take action to deal with Foley.

Palmer promptly denied it.

Now, according to the Post, another congressional staffer has come forward to say that Fordham is telling the truth and Palmer is lying.

And the piece in the Post also touches on this topic we discussed back on October 1st. Jeff Trandahl, you'll remember, is the former House Clerk who, along with Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), had the sit-down with Foley in late 2005 ...

SNIP

Trandahl's departure came within days of his confrontation with Foley over e-mails that the congressman had sent a former page. House aides say the circumstances of Trandahl's exit were oddly quiet. The departure of a staff member of long standing, especially one as important as the House clerk, is usually marked with considerable fanfare, said Scott Lilly, a former Democratic staff director of the House Appropriations Committee. Debate is suspended in mid-afternoon to accommodate a stream of testimonials from lawmakers.

Trandahl's departure was marked by a one-minute salute from Shimkus and a brief insert into the Congressional Record.

"My one-hour Special Order changed to a five-minute Special Order, now to a one-minute," Shimkus said. "I just want to say thank you for the work you have done."

Lilly said: "He seemed to suddenly disappear in a puff of smoke."

Pretty clear a lotta this story has yet to unfold.

But I guess that's what next week is for.

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/010238.php

******************************

Number 2:

Pages are bubbling forth like Foley's finger was pulled from a dike (no pun intended), and there are rumors that something BIG is coming down the line re: Foley having actual physical contact

*************************

Number 3:

They are Spinning Furiously to try and bluster it out, accusing Pelosi and Durbin of politicing this, demanding they apologise. Well, what they do BEST is to make the Message an ARGUEMENT, put some Poop in the Soup so no one wants to touch it.. won't work, this is too big, and has more legs than a caterpiller on steroids. Blaming the Left will make no Difference, this is TOO SIMPLE, Visceral, Symbolic for them TO SPIN.. It's so repulsive, like dragging a dead cat around and then blaming everyone around you for passing gas, won't fly. Joe Sixpack is DISGUSTED as are REAL Christians.

*********

Number 4:

Even the pundits on the media smell blood. This is INFOTAINMENT at it's best. Tweety, Tucker, etc are pounding this issue and won't let it go, bad for the right who want to tone it down -- the very person who BEGGED ABC NOT to run the IM's QUIT that day.

*************

Number 5: This keeps amping itself, first "naughty" IMs, then NASTY IMs, then FOLEY is showing UP at Page Dorms, looking for boy ass..

*************

Number 6:

Politicians being PAID OFF to NOT talk about this BY FOLEY - he sent a 100,000 bucks to an associate the day AFTER he resigned, a sure sign that there's WAY MORE to be told, and also a sign, given the proximity of the receiver to Hastert that Hastert better go bone up on his resume for the Private sector, he's TOAST..

There are more points, but I see these as the main ones, and when Hastert goes down, that huge body of his will roll down Capitol Hill collecting other heads like a giant Jaw Breaker catching fuzz in a kid's pocket, and when it comes to rest it will have left a large empty trail of Who USED TO have a JOB in Washington DC.

Watch for it, anyone want to start a POOL? :)

2. Spin I heard tonight........
When Democrats get caught, they find excuses to stay. When Republicans get caught, they resign honorably.

The other one was a doozy: If Clinton had resigned, Gore would have become President and easily defeated Bush in 2000, so Clinton is the reason we have Bush. (The Republican dishing this out was just giddy with smiley emoticons.)

Has Turd was caught and is in his seventh rendition of excuses as to why he should not resign.

Duke (stir-bound) spent months and months claiming an ever changing scenario for why he was not guilty and should not be prosecuted, only to sobbingly admit he'd been lying, stealing, taking bribes and dodging justice all along-for two years of investigating.

Tom - gimme five!- DeLay was caught three times, sanctioned, demoted, and tried every trick in the book, rewriting the book, of course, trying to avoid his appointment with truth, as well as having 232 members doing every thing they could to save him.
His chastized offenses date clear back to 1997. More and more of his crookedness is coming out every week and he still won't admit to his crimes.

Ralph Reed even ran for lt governor after evidence of his crookedness came out, with more every day, yet he admits of no wrongdoing and his weak minded christian coalition symbiots think he's Jesus the Christ reanimated.

Rush limpbugger-caught red handed doing the hillbilly heroin hoedown, just lied and lied for years. He was caught coming back into the country with his boy child rape kit in his luggage and he ain't stepped down from anything.

Colin Powell-caught red handed lying to the world-and he knew it-yet did not fess up and step down. W fired his ass.

Bush, himself has been caught lieing about everything under the sun, doing hard drugs, deserted his military career, fucked around on his wife, has had people tortured, assassinated, killed, on and on and we all know what's going on there.

Cheney--fill it in yourself.

Ahnold the idiot-we all know that story and how does he respond? "Old news."

Ney of Ohio-Has denied his crimes for years and only resigned as part of a plea bargain.

Let's face it: Foley only resigned because he knows the shit is gonna hit the fan and we've barely scratched the surface. Oh, and what's he really doing? He's hiding out at some high falutin' recovery center until the worst of the shit blows over and his million dollar lawyers make up enough stories to sort of cover for him.

Ford said it best-paraphrasing-I will not accept criticism from a party that accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to cover up for a child molester.

The poopliclown party is infested with example after example to refute such groundless claims and I, not terribly well informed, could go on for an hour listing them and still be barely started.

on edit: by the way, the purveyor of this spin was shamelessly plagairizing without attribution. I think it was Steven Colbert who first came up with this bit of ridiculous humor.

Cheney--has been rumored to use little kids as prey during his hunting safaris in the Pennsylvania backwoods.

Cheney--Shot a guy in the face!

I'll have to credit that last one to Jon Stewart...or was it Letterman?

16. Remember what happened?
The VICTIM APOLOGISED to CHENEY. Scary shit, eh?

So NOW the repigs are demanding that Dean and Pelosi apologise to THEM, I'm still laughing as I type.. :)

It's like someone runs over your foot with a car, backs up, parks ON your foot and demands that YOU apologise. No, that's even cooler than what they do..
Let's face it, and this is the platform I'd run on..

ALL Republicans are CREEPY toads, they have bad skin, can't dance, little chicken teeth, are eating YOUR LUNCH (and only took ONE BITE out of your steak, with their hands), want a BJ from your women, but no sex, then will toss them away until YOU show up.. They call the cops when you're having a party. Borrow your lawnmower and never bring it back. They keyed your car while you were in the bar last Saturday, they told you NOT to drink, when they couldn't..

Oh, and they want to fuck your son, not just rape him, but WHISPER CREEPY STUFF in his EAR first.

Man, that says it all about Foley, just plain CREEPY. They hit the Hard Wiring of everyone's brain with this, the part of a voter's brain that GETS EVEN, and they know it, all they can do is CHANGE the subject, so if you think you're afraid of your kids being screwed by a pervert, they'll make you worry about your kids being blown to pieces, period.

Perversion, followed by just a HINT of FEAR Mongering. Within ten days I bet we have a terror increase, or Hastert steps down.. Rove appears to be on the job now, so Yee Haw time is around the corner. :)

If there wasn't a witch hunt to find ANY dirt on Clinton, then his affair would have gone the way of every other presidential affair that you've never heard of.

Do you honestly think that Clinton is the only guy to get elected to the most powerful job in the free world who ever get a little on the side?

It may not be palatable, but it's reality.

between CONSENTING ADULTS, and a CREEPY old man cruising young boys.

And remember that even while PRESIDENT Clinton was being "impeached" he STILL had a 75% approval rating, Bush ain't seen that since Hastert last saw his own dick.

And if the dog hadn't stopped to lick his balls he would have caught the rabbit, old saying, still true.

Here's a thought for you: They wanted in by fair means or foul. The 2000 election was fixed seventy different ways. There was no way in HELL the Democratic candidate was going to take office. It wasn't a matter of the Republicans seizing an opportunity, they MADE the opportunity and then created the media outrage.

Clinton's zipper was the ONLY thing they could find to get him on. They had NO impeachable offense. They couldn't get him for stealing a paper clip, NOTHING. He was squeaky clean as proven by their own exhaustive and coercive investigation.

Had Gore run as President, they would have done something heinous to besmirch him. The man is a boyscout and they still made him seem like a braggart liar when that is the definition of Bush.

Blaming Clinton for Bush is..........well, a very very Republican thing to do.

Making it through a paragraph of text without smoking the spell check is usually all it takes. But let them think they've dropped a zinger on the Dems, especially if it involves Clinton AND Gore, and they'll go into an orgasmic bout of emoticonic overuse. Then they'll start a spam campaign based on said supposed "zinger," guaranteeing that we'll all here the same lame joke 50 million times over the next week.

We're dealing with extremely simple group of people here, gang. Barely literate, and humorlessly self-centered.

7. about blaming the Dems
the frame goes like this: the Dems knew about Foley and chose to "wait" and "ambush" the repugs with it prior to the (s)election - therefore Foley and the repugs are not responsibile

- Given that congress is controlled by repugs, run by repugs - how is it the repugs DIDN'T know about Foley, but the Dems supposedly did know?

- If this is all just a political ploy - why did Foley resign so quickly? the accusations against DeLay were numerous and well reported, yet DeLay hung on for a year or more to fight the accusations and Ney hung on until the last minute too and there are other repugs fighting against various scandals/accusations - so why didn't Foley fight?

There are two issues here:

1. Foley's actions
2. What did the repub leadership know, when did they know about it, and why didn't they do anything about it prior to the breaking news?

8. I somehow missed the timing of the story on #6
I knew that Foley gave someone 100k but didn't realize it happened after he resigned.

If the story keeps its ugly face in front of voters it's going to feed the animosity of soured on Congress, anti-incumbent voters. Seems to my memory that scandels that stick around are those that don't peak early. If you are right about #2 then regular hints about worse things are better for us than having those gems revealled too soon.

The great thing is that it certainly has the R's in the "every man for himself mode." The panic has them reaching for even poor handholds. The "blame it on Soros and Dem activists" ploy not only made them look stupid but it revealled the sort of desperation that betrays being caught in the act of committing the offense. Which begs all the more the "who knew what when" and the "what are they so afraid" of questions.

I'd forgotten to list the "SOROS and the ALIENS MADE ME DO IT", But I didn't do it, really, defense.. thanks for mentioning that :)

How PATHETIC. Jesus, talk about losing your touch as a politician. I was reading about that today in the local newspaper, and it was stunningly retarded.

Even hack republicans were telling him to cut it out, what a wonderful time to start screaming about THEM having TIN FOIL HAT CONSPIRACIES, eh?

They DELIVERED it to us, right there on a silver platter, and now it's GONE.. the Dems are always too slow, they don't have the killer instinct it takes to sucker punch these little punks. It would be so easy.

I really wish they'd hire me or some of the folks I know, who don't take any shit. Call us Liberals with GUNS, a new party that kicks ass, doesn't bring a plastic spoon to a knife fight, and LOVES to show off a black eye :) except democrats don't trust people that tell truth uncut either..

Hastert is SCREWED. It's coming at him from too many directions, old aides that Don't Care, can't get a job anyway, everyone WANTS HIS, so he's the chicken in the yard with a red spot on his head, and when chickens see that another chicken has a red spot, they ALL start pecking at it, soon they're ALL covered in red spots, so the frenzy begins, until there's ONE half dead chicken in the yard.

More fun than Boiling frogs real slow :)

12. Did anyone see Polly Klaas' father on Larry King???!

Klaas interview was particularly incindary. He went through the qualities of a sexual predator and described how people like Foley get themselves in a position of authority and manipulate the system to get what they want. Hearing Klaas talk was stunning. If he starts showing up on all of these talk shows, the Republicans really have something to worry about because he carries a lot of clout.

Foley actually worked with Klaas on the Child Protection law.

Foley died of "treatment".. someone accidentally "doin' a heck of a job" down there at the Treatment center, somehow injected poor Foley with BLEACH instead of his Happy Funtime Non Alcoholic "Make the Bad stuff go away" Juice they can give you at those centers..

And his vocal cords dissolved, hands are damaged so he can't sign, no real way of communicating with him.

OR he decided in SHAME to join the Military to FIGHT for FREEDOM in Iraq and SHIPPED OUT only to be killed by an IUD (Intra Uterine Device) on the Battle field, and Bush will give him a Purple Heart Posthumorously :)

22. Former clerk Trandahl openly gay. "Personally close" to Foley.

Trandahl, now the executive director of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, has not returned repeated phone calls and e-mails.

Congressional aides point to another factor that links Trandahl to the Foley matter. A member of the board of the national gay rights group Human Rights Campaign, Trandahl is openly homosexual and personally close to the now-disgraced former lawmaker, who announced through his lawyer this week that he is gay.

Staff writers Jim VandeHei, Charles Babington, Dan Eggen and Allan Lengel contributed to this report.

39. John Aravosis, Americablog, has questions for Hastert
Aravosis heard rumors about Foley/page harassment last summer, but could not substantiate them so he didn't report. That is how decent journalists behave- report what they can get supportive evidence for and sit on unsubstantiated rumors. (Unlike how most corporate media handles 'rumors' about DEMS, going off and reporting them until proven wrong)

So now, Aravosis is on horns of a dilemma: He has heard more rumors. Hastert insists to not report rumors is bad. Good journalism requires that rumors be fleshed out with some sort of proof before being reported.

What to do? What to do?

Second GOP Congressman snared

Hastert's office playing politics with evidence

Hastert and his hotline is a threat to any REAL investigation by the FBI. You don't have people call YOU first if they think there has been criminal activity! His hotline for pages and tipsters is nothing more than an intimidation tactic and info mining so they can see how best to protect their own criminal asses. How long before someone in the GOP 'management' figures it would be easier on everyone if tipsters just disappeared?

40. Hastert is gone, I agree
Edited on Sat Oct-07-06 11:38 AM by Rockstone
repigs have a choice here and they have kind of waited too long. The should have had them all resign immediately - anyone even suspected of being involved. That would have given them enough time to get downstream from it before the midterms. What they chose to do is to be stubborn, which is going to drag this thing our over the whole run up to the midterms. That is the worst possible scenario for them, but they chose it.

42. Picture General Hass and the whole Pub Cast on the walls of Ft PUB
surrounded by the enenmy...." Gasp...They Got Truth Arrows...."

All we got is horse turds for our cannon and sling shots...."

Dennhy Hasturd is gonna go down lying through his teeth, kickin and ah screaming, dragging a whole bunch with him, etc.

Trapped like the Bleached Whales afore mentioned, flapping their jaws in vain, they are almost helpless....they still stink.

People not buying their lies and crap too much these days...caught lying too many times....

The Pubs represent evil and Badness..the evidence is clear...Lookit the damage they did.

46. Does the Foley scandal prove the existence of a God?
Greenwald writes:

The Foley scandal is so perfectly tailored -- one could even say artistically designed -- to expose every character flaw of this country's Republican leaders (and their followers), and it has evolved so flawlessly (like the most brilliantly coordinated symphony), that one is almost inclined to believe that it was divinely inspired. It is difficult to believe that human beings (let alone Democrats) could create something so perfect (as Billmon wrote in comments here the other day, the relentless efficiency of this scandal is proof positive that Democrats had nothing to do with it). I agree with John Podhoretz's description:

This whole Foley business is one of the most dazzling political plays in my or any other lifetime - like watching an unassisted triple play or a running back tossing a 90-yard touchdown pass on a double-reverse.

The perfection of this scandal lies in its substance, not its theatrics. The Foley scandal is not -- as even some Bush opponents have asserted -- an aberrational, isolated, inconsequential melodrama that is unrelated to the substantive and important critiques of the Bush movement and which just coincidentally emerged as a cynical weapon that can be used to defeat the Republicans. The opposite is true. This scandal has resonated so powerfully because it is shining such a powerful light on the towering hubris, utter lack of intellectual and ethical integrity, and deeply engrained corruption that accounts for virtually every other Bush disaster -- from Iraq to law-breaking scandals to torture to Abrahmoff-type corruption schemes and everything in between.

(and snip)
But for so many reasons -- its relative simplicity, its crystal clarity, the involvement of emotionally-charged issues, the salacious sex aspects -- this Foley scandal circumvents that whole dynamic. People are paying attention on their own. They don't need pundits or journalists to tell them what to think about it because they are able to form deeply held opinions on their own. None of the standard obfuscation tactics used for so long by Bush followers are working here. To the contrary, their attempted use of those tactics is making things much worse for them, because people can see that Bush followers are attempting -- through the use of patently dishonest and corrupt tactics -- to excuse the inexcusable. And seeing that, it gives great credence to all of the accusations voiced over the last five years that this is how the Bush movement operates in every area, because people can now see it for themselves.

In that regard, this scandal is like the Cliffs' Notes version of a more complicated treatise on how the Bush movement operates. Every one of their corrupt attributes is vividly on display here:
