re Cokie Roberts: hell has frozen over
Edited on Mon Oct-02-06 07:21 AM by sendero
Cokie just gave an emminently fair commentary about the Foley scandal. I've not before heard one single one of her commentaries that did not contain backhanded swipes at Dems. This one really doesn't.

Her interviewer asked her: "could this backfire on the Dems". She said, not unless there is one of them involved, and even then only if they are supposed to be heading the committees and sponsoring legislation that's supposed to protect the kids (obviously paraphrased from memory).

To be honest, she actually seems to be angry about this, saying - when parents send their kids to Washington to be pages or interns, they expect them to be reasonably protected from this sort of thing. (another paraphrase)

Whew.

1. That's saying something coming from this pukey bag, but I
didn't see it, so I will reserve judgment.

3. This is one of those core emotional issues
Folks give up their political biases when the immediate safety of children is involved. The same was true during Katrina. It's a hopeful sign.

5. Here's a thought.........
A lot of right-leaning news folk are female. Could Cokie be just one of many to "come out" over the next few days/weeks? One has to wonder about the effect of a pedophile sex-scandal (with cover up) in a Repug controlled congress among that group that have kids?

11. Not necessesarily so...
At least one rightwing mom I know is still harping on Bill's blue dress blunder. She insists that Bill is much guiltier than Foley. I just kept saying, "Monica was a consenting adult in her 20's. These kids are teenagers!!!" :grr: Some people will just never change or admit that their party screwed up (so to speak...).

10. That's an absolutely correct statement.
she's right. If parents can't depend on their kids being safe from predatory Congressmen, what does that say about the laws made by those law-breaking Congressmen? Why, it might mean that all the laws they do pass, are suspect.

12. Bay Buchanan was on a show last night
I think CNN, and she was similarly outraged. There was no spin, just that this was wrong and the leadership was wrong.
