Could the next President wipe out Bush's items via executive order
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 02:09 PM by Ignacio Upton
Assuming we win in 2008, we'll have a ton of shit to repreal from the Bush era. Unfortunately, even if we get control of Congress this year, Bush will still be able to keep his nefarious agenda in place with the veto pen. The up side to controlling Congress will be that we can prevent Bush from inflicting FURTHER damage, but because we'll not have a veto-proof majority, we'll not be able to roll back most of his previous bills (although we could let the tax cuts expire.)
I'm wondering though, could the next Democratic President roll back the detainee bill and the wiretapping bill (assuming the worst in that both of them become law) by executive order? What about the bankruptcy bill or the signing statements or the enviromental policies? Yeah, I know that he would need to go through Congress to roll back a lot of Bush's shit, although whether or not we'll control Congress after 2008 is unclear.

1. Why Not?
This administration has given us the precedent that an administration can do any damn thing they want. Let's use that precedent to make things correct!

2. If I'm not mistaken, the first EO Clinton nullified was the dreadful
Reagan international abortion gag rule, cutting off funding for overseas family planning if they so much as mentioned abortion even if it was the only way to save a woman's life (think tubal pregnancy, a death sentence in the bush).

Yes, EOs can be and should be countermanded. I would think any Democrat worthy of the name will probably overturn at least 90% of Stupid's EOs.

They're unconstitutional, immoral, unchristian, and just plain evil.

5. I wonder how the next Democratic President will handle signing statements?
The Machiavellian side of me kind of wants him to keep some of Bush's nefarious laws to scare the shit out of the GOP and give them an incentive to support repeal. They only trust Bush will violating the Geneva Convention because he's a Republican. Although, if our President repeals some of bullshit regarding detainees and wiretapping, the GOP will probably accuse him of being "soft" on terrorism for overturning Bush's violations of the Constitution. Also...could the President overturn parts of the Patriot Act via executive order?

11. Bush* reversed Clinton environmental initiatives

Quiet Environmental Rules Changes Decried

By Robert Schlesinger,
Boston Globe
1/5/2002

WASHINGTON - While the nation's attention has been focused on the war against terrorism, the Bush administration has continued its effort to redirect the environmental policies of the Clinton years.

Among the new Bush regulations are a number of decisions that could increase recreational and industrial activity on federally protected lands, allow more road building in national forests, and make it harder to block mining permits.
