Former Teammates: Sen. Allen Used N-Word "Repeatedly"
Three former college football teammates of Sen. George Allen say that the Virginia Republican repeatedly used an inflammatory racial epithet and demonstrated racist attitudes toward blacks during the early 1970s.

"Allen said he came to Virginia because he wanted to play football in a place where 'blacks knew their place,'" said Dr. Ken Shelton, a white radiologist in North Carolina who played tight end for the University of Virginia football team when Allen was quarterback. "He used the N-word on a regular basis back then."

A second white teammate, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he feared retribution from the Allen campaign, separately claimed that Allen used the word "nigger" to describe blacks. "It was so common with George when he was among his white friends. This is the terminology he used," the teammate said.

2. But of course when he made that crack about
blacks and swimming, DU'ers came out in droves to defend him. :eyes: As Maya Angelou said, "...when people show you who they are, the first time...believe them."

Thanks for the article link, ariesgem. :hi:

3. He didn't say that
That was Tramm Hudson, who ran for Congress in Florida's 13th district.

13. Thank you for the correction, KingFlorez...
...I appreciate it! Got to learn to keep the racists' straight. There've been so many comments of late (Allen, Hudson, Schwarzennegger)one needs a score card to keep up.

:hi:

6. ?? As KingFlorez said, that wasn't Allen but a Repub who ran for
Harris' Congressional seat from Florida. Video here: http://www.tpmcafe.com/blog/electioncentral/2006/aug/17/fl_sen_blacks_may_not_even_know_how_to_swim He lost the Repub primary for that seat.

As for DU'ers defending either Allen or Hudson? Please provide a link if you can since I don't recall seeing DU'ers coming out "in droves to defend" Allen or Hudson for their racist comments. I thought Hudson's comments were among the most spectacularly stupid I'd heard in quite some time. I must have missed the "droves" of DU'ers posting "in defense" for either Allen or Hudson, if it indeed happened as you claim.

I'm guessing that maybe I've seen more of the sort of thread I speak of than you have on DU. I have a tendency to open threads about race and race relations. I wish I could say they are all progressive in nature and everyone agrees about what is bigotry or offensive--but unfortunately this is not always the case.

There have been some that regularly defended racism and racists on threads on DU. Your challenging me to provide a link says to me that you apparently have not witnessed this personally. You're fortunate in that you have missed that rather sad (and ugly)aspect of our board.

Here's the link you requested:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x1930502

Please keep in mind, several posts were deleted from this thread. There's no evidence of their deletion on the thread, as entire sub-threads were deleted. I was active in posting on that thread, and recall at least two lengthy subthreads disappeared from the thread while I was responding to it. It was much worse than it appears now(thankfully).

Also, it's only fair that you know--for me a "drove"on DU is the equivalent of two or more.;)

More than two people making excuses for, or arguing on behalf of obviously bigoted statements, is too many for my taste on a progressive board. So, "drove" probably isn't accurate, and I do apologize if you feel that was an exaggeration or misleading. But I promise, I wouldn't make gross generalizations about a community I like and enjoy if I had not experienced this first hand.

Whenever there are threads about race, racism or bigotry inevitably someone seems to come along to provide "reasons for the existence of racism" :eyes: as if those that are familiar with discrimination don't know where it comes from. Or someone pops in to say that the person making the offensive comments, "...probably didn't mean it THAT WAY." OR people just parrot what others are saying and dogpile on the few people trying to explain how and why the statements ARE insensitive and/or racially biased.

It's a pattern I've become all too aware of. :(

take care,
bliss :)

18. Well not fair to see an expurgated thread, but would think "droves"
is hyperbole if its at most a few posters. But I see your point. Yeah I've seen some bizarre even hateful stuff on DU so there are some threads I tend to stay out of and some stuff may be "disappeared" by the time I get around to them. There still were some uh, "interesting" comments in that thread though....
