Of course his Cooperative Research timeline, a great resource was written after the fact....but I know I saw more references before this week to those threats to bomb Pakistan into the Stone Age.

"September 11-16, 2001: Pakistan Threatened; Promises to Support US ISI Director Lt. Gen. It is later suggested that Israel and India threatened to attack Pakistan and take control of its nuclear weapons if Pakistan did not side with the US. It is later reported that Mahmood’s presence in Washington was a lucky blessing; one Western diplomat saying it “must have helped in a crisis situation when the US was clearly very, very angry.”

9. Found the original 2001 article from LA Weekly.

I am not familiar with the author, but the article brings out that it caused much discord in Pakistan to cooperate with the US. I remember knowing about this before Musharaff mentioned it this week, and I wondered why the media was going crazy over it.

"Armitage said Friday that he never made such a threat and that he was not authorized to make any threats during that meeting. "I never made a threat in my life that I couldn't back up," he said on CNN. "Since I wasn't authorized to say such a thing, hence, I couldn't back up that threat."

Bush also said that he "was taken aback by the harshness of the words" of the purported threat, and doubted that events unfolded that way. He said he recalled that Musharraf was "one of the first leaders to step up and say that the stakes have changed."

Armitage did recall telling Pakistan's leaders they had to make a choice between supporting the Taliban and supporting the United States

Bin Laden says he wasn't behind attacks

DOHA, Qatar (CNN) -- Islamic militant leader Osama bin Laden, the man the United States considers the prime suspect in last week's terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, denied any role Sunday in the actions believed to have killed thousands.

In a statement issued to the Arabic satellite channel Al Jazeera, based in Qatar, bin Laden said, "The U.S. government has consistently blamed me for being behind every occasion its enemies attack it.

"I would like to assure the world that I did not plan the recent attacks, which seems to have been planned by people for personal reasons," bin Laden's statement said.

Immediately after the attacks that demolished the World Trade Center's landmark twin towers and seriously damaged the Pentagon, officials of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban said they doubted bin Laden could have been involved in carrying out the actions.

During a special briefing at the State Department, Powell expressed his sympathy to other nations who had lost citizens in the destruction of the World Trade Center and declared that "terrorism is a crime against all civilization." He said that the United States had provided Pakistan with a list of areas for cooperation, and he intended to discuss that list with President Musharraf. Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage had already spoken with Pakistani representatives. Powell also had spoken with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Israel, and with Chairman Yasir Arafat in an effort to promote a cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinians. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz said that a response to the terrorist attacks would be a sustained military campaign, "with the full resources of the U.S. Government." The State Department announced that Deputy Secretary of State Armitage, Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Elizabeth Jones, Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Christina Rocca, and Counterterrorism Coordinator Francis Taylor would visit Moscow and Brussels on September 19-20 to discuss cooperation against terrorism. The meeting in Moscow would include a meeting of a bilateral Afghan Working Group. Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'Neill said that disruptions to the U.S. economy resulting from terrorist attacks would be short-term, and prospects for a recovery remained good. The New York Stock Exchange was to reopen on September 17.
