E-mail from my sister in Thailand...
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 10:08 AM by Atman
She is about 700km from Bangkok, on Ko Samui, so she's probably a bit insulated from the serious stuff, but the tone of this e-mail doesn't sound too ominous...a "snow day," perhaps.

Hi All....

NOt sure if you have see the news...but Thailand is having a bit of a cou! IT's a first for me but we didn't know until this morning and all the TV stations have been blocked and only the BBC world remained with a big banner reading THAILAND CRISIS. Well....the schools were cancelled today and that is about the only sign of anything drastic around these parts...so not to worry. (there are more children running around than normally on a Wednesday) The Thai people seemed totally unconcerned and say things will be normal tomorrow. Soooooo...Just so you know...we are fine and this is reportedly been the most peaceful takeover on record...so please don't worry!!! that is all...

Love to all from sunny taken over thailand!

2. All it means is that it is a right wing coup
and clearly Bushco and Blair support it or the PM would have spoken at the UN yesterday. The rise of monarchies and religious zealots is frightening.

3. The BBC had an article on it last night
saying there were tanks in the streets of the capital, but that the locals had a carnival atmosphere going on. They'd never seen tanks before, most of them, and were having their pictures taken posing next to the tanks.

4. Glad she's fine
Samui is completely out of the coup loop. No worries.

Phuket, however, had a sort of brigade moved there, APC's and no tanks. Maybe to stabilize to prevent our navy from seeing a need to protect and defend its port there.
