4. Where are you seeing that they have called it?
While he has a large lead it doesn't yet look insurmountable from the numbers on boston.com as of 9:15PM

9. Channel 6? What's that?
I'm not trying to be flip here (I'm a heavy Patrick supporter myself and voted for him a few hours ago), I've been monitoring the local news and haven't seen anyone call it yet. Are you referring to NECN which is channel 6 on most Comcast outlets in MA?

Edited on Tue Sep-19-06 08:27 PM by MethuenProgressive
He's a political neophyte, little more than just another wealthy dilettante playing politician. The Massachusetts governorship seems to attract the Weld-Romney-Patrick types. The best man didn't win this one. I guess the 10% of registered Democrats who voted for him were impressed by the slick ads, well-coached speeches, and practiced sincerity. We could've done better. I wish him well, for after all it's only Massachusetts - where the Gov is just a figure head.

11. Apparently you know next to nothing about Patrick
Given that my wife's best friend has Christmas dinner with the Patrick family every year and that she is personally one of the most progressive people I have ever known, I think I'll take her word as to the character of Deval Patrick and as to his sincerity about helping the people of MA.

26. Well aren't you just the comedian?
Why didn't you just say Hitler rather than Bush? Do you honestly think that anyone doesn't see through that pathetic attempt to use our emotional dislike of Bush as a lynchpin to create a negative feeling towards Patrick?

For your information, Patrick was a guest of my wife's friend's parents, both of whom were public school teachers. They are long time friends and are all long time Democrats. But apparently an African-American man who fought through poverty and understands the plight of the poor in this country, a man who served in a Democratic administration fighting for civil rights, a man who is looking to make an honest contribution isn't good enough for you. Well go ahead and vote for Kealey if you dislike him so much.

32. so now describing him as an African-American is "playing the race card" ?
I couldn't have merely been pointing out that as a poor African-American he faced greater challenges than a poor white American? Sheesh you really are a piece of work aren't you?

37. love how you use the ellipsis to eliminate the bulk of my statement
in order to alter it to attempt to make it look like the descriptive element "African-American" was the primary point within my statement rather than what it was, which was a small component of the point that he overcame great adversity to attain the nomination for governor of Massachusetts. Not the first time in your posts in this thread you used simple logical fallacies in order to attempt to ridicule me. Keep it up. I'm still waiting for the ad-hominem attack, or maybe the appeal to authority.

15. disagree with your characterization...
weld and romney were born with silver spoons in their mouths; neither worked their way up from anything like the street. What wealth Patrick has, he's earned; his public service bona fides are as good as welds and far better than romney's at this point in career.

patrick's campaign was totally outside of the party apparatchnick system; reilly was one in a long line of morally equivocal, party hacks who are so used to relying on a hidebound system that when confronted with the reality of a real campaign, he couldn't make a right move. Gabrieli probably deserves better than he got; but as far as the best man winning, based on history, smarts, innovative ideas, and the freedom to work outside the system by building a grassroots campaign that inspires, Patrick is the man.

as for the gov being a figurehead; that may be so when you have dem house and senate and republican lightweights like romney and healy and swift and cellucci, but when a real leader moves into the office, i believe great things can happen.

never been to the deval website.
didn't vote in the primary because i'm not an enrolled democrat, i'm not even an unenrolled voter.
didn't make a contribution to deval.

my reference to real leader had to do with the whores who've occupied the corner office for the past 16 years, and my own belief based on what I've seen and heard that patrick will both stand for something and figure out how to effectively make a single-party legislature seriously address issues facing the commonwealth.

you spell divine with an "i", but if you'd been to his website, you'd know that.

give credit to some of us for thinking things out on our own. glib is fine; assumptions that are casual and inaccurate undermine your own credibility as a poster.
my source is my own observation, over forty years of political activism, and serving as an elected/re-elected School Committee member in my own community, committed to progressive educational reform. how's about a little credit for that?

and btw, who was your "leader" in the gov race?

in my town, Newburyport, we had a couple of "progressives" who were elected as delegates for Patrick change their vote on the floor of the convention to Gabrieli after a closed door meeting with him. That probably gave Gabrieli the tiny percentage he managed to get to put him on the ballot. But it didn't change the fact that those who were willing to come out and vote simply thought Patrick had more to offer.

staying home on election day this year, or is Billy Galvin on the ballot enough to bring you into the voting precinct?

28. So glad to see a real democratic national level politician on the way
to being Governor in MA.

I was so mad when Reich lost out to whats her name, O'Brien. You just knew that she was going to get her ass kicked all over the place the pubs and the RW Bush shill Romney.

MA has a history or marching local pols to the slaughter. Thank the supreme being that a dem with national name recognition and an inter-national vision is in the race.
