No Name-Calling Week Kicks Off in Schools Nationwide; More Than 5,000 Educators, Administrators Officially Register to Take Part

NEW YORK, Jan. 23 /U.S. Newswire/ -- No Name-Calling Week, a project of GLSEN and Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, in collaboration with more than 40 national education organizations, officially kicked off in schools nationwide today. The project is aimed at grades five through eight, but students and educators at other grade levels can easily adapt the program and materials.

Last year more than 5,000 educators and administrators registered to take part, and we expect that No Name-Calling Week, now in its third year, will have even greater participation. Results from 2004 bullying surveys in schools indicated that students reported a significant decrease in the amount of bullying and harassment in school after taking part in the first No Name-Calling Week and its activities.

"I, along with over 40 organizational partners, am proud to be a part of the solution to the problem of bullying and harassment in America's schools," said GLSEN Executive Director Kevin Jennings. "Every week should and can be a No Name-Calling Week and every school should be a place where students feel safe and respected."

This year approximately one-third of the participants in the No Name-Calling Week Creative Expression Contest were in elementary school. Students age 8 -18 submitted original entries including songs, poems, video and more.

Wonder if this would work well here - no name calling regarding neocons, et al and so on :)
I think I would need to do a lot of drinking an no posting...

So how long do you think you could go without calling assmaster bushboy a name or any other rethugs (and of course fellow DU'ers)?

And I guess it brings up the question - why call people names anyway (ie label them in ways derogatory, use symbols for their names, et al)?

Not saying I disagree with doing so mind ya :) just wondering why.

4. AHHHHHH well that lasted about 2 seconds :)
Maybe schools should have a big flamefest once a week and let kids get it out :)

6. Seriously, though.
I wish that in general the dialogue was a little more rational. Although I think a lot of people (including me sometimes) get a sense of relief using DU as a place to call Bush whatever they want.

But in the 'real world' I think it is really important to use calmer language and tones. the last thing we want to do is alienate people if we are trying to bring them over from the dark side.

3. bush made himself a bad person. Calling him a monster implies someone els
e did it. Although his parents certainly didn´t raise him to be a decent person, his enjoyment of killing people and lying were his own choices.
