Schwarzenegger vetoes textbook bill

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill Wednesday aimed at keeping textbooks with disparaging comments about gays out of state schools, saying existing law better protects against such discrimination. "This bill attempts to offer vague protection when current law already provides clear protection against discrimination in our schools based on sexual orientation," the Republican governor said in a statement.
Schwarzenegger said the bill's wording, specifically a passage that would bar textbook material that "reflects adversely" on gays, was "extremely vague" compared with the state law providing for equal rights and opportunities in state schools regardless of sexual orientation.
The bill by Democratic state Sen. Sheila Kuehl, a lesbian, originally required textbooks used in public schools to include material on contributions of gays to California's history. She changed the bill after Schwarzenegger warned of a veto. Kuehl in a statement said her revised bill would have augmented existing anti-discrimination law and charged Schwarzenegger with bowing to demands for a veto from conservatives.
