Divisive and Politicized Accounts of September 11th Attacks and National Security Issues Endanger Nation


Washington, DC - Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY-28), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, today called for ABC to make clear to viewers that its upcoming television mini-series The Path to 9/11 is not a documentary account of the events and political decisions that preceded the terrorist attacks of that day.



"ABC has a responsibility to make clear that this film is not a documentary, and does not represent an official account of the facts surrounding the September 11th attacks," Rep. Slaughter said. "Disclaimers noting that The Path to 9/11 is a docudrama should be shown throughout its airing. We have yet to establish the impartiality and accuracy of the people behind this film and the claims it advances, and the American people need to know that."



Rep. Slaughter also expressed concern over the timing of the mini-series, as well as recent Republican rhetoric on the issue of national security and its connection to the war in Iraq.



"But what is far more important is the timing of this movie," Rep. Slaughter continued. "The anniversary of the attacks is an emotional time, and it is wrong for anyone to play on those emotions and use them to advance a political agenda."

to expose the failures of the GOP which allowed 9/11 to happen:

- distracting the public from important national security issues to follow the innumerable false "scandals" they tried to smear Clinton with, the worst of which was "Monicagate"

- failing to enact necessary anti-terror legislation proposed by Clinton in 1996, 1997, 1998 & 1999.

- appointing a President with direct personal & financial ties to the bin Laden family & al Queda.

- once in office, Bush ignored Clinton initiatives bringing peace to the Israel-Palestine conflict, ignored Clinton initiatives to track international financial transactions for terrorist organizations, and shifted focus for the intelligence community from al Queda to Iraq.

- Bush ignored the warnings of Richard Clarke, then demoted & finally fired him - all for doing his job. Unfortunately his job conflicted with the POLITICAL aspirations of the Bush administration.

- dozens counter-terrorism officials and experts in a host of other federal government agencies, from the FBI to the CIA to the NSA, all suffered a fate similar to Clarke's: trying to draw the attention of the Bush admin to the threat posed by terrorism in general and al Queda in particular, only to be ignored, marginalized, fired - and in some cases charged with crimes - simply for the political gain of the GOP.

- after 9/11, the admin implemented a massive cover-up of what lead up to the attacks, suppressing any questions of WHY the attacks occurred, WHY our intelligence failed, and WHY the admin ignored the specific warnings that it received.

I urge anyone else that is upset about this to do the same. Do I need to remind you all of the way they dumped Michael Moore's documentary F 9/11. F 9/11 was a true documentary and they wanted nothing to do with it. How dare they green-light a fictional film and call it a docudrama?!

Is there a way to find out who is sponsoring this show? The MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO PROTEST anything on television is to target the sponsors -- the advertisers. Being in advertising for over 20 years, I've seen where even one or two letters can change the influence of an ad strategy or media buy. Write the brand managers -- they hate any negative publicity surrounding their product/service. They wield incredible power over the networks and their programming. This goes for those clowns who buy time on FOX as well. Call! Write! E-mail! Complain! Tell them you will not buy their product. YOU WILL BE HEARD and IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

48. I think this is partly a response to Lieberman's loss...

Lieberman having his ass handed to him was a big lesson the the entrenched entitlement club of the Senate and Congress and their big money backers. Very, very big. This is now the danger point. What will they do about the netroots and the internet?

Will the Dems start embracing it by makeing the Democrat party Democratic again? Will have to eject the DLC and put the DSCC and DCCC on notice. Should be shunning Lieberman. Except for Dean and the DNC, nothing's really happened so far. Who actually controls and enforces the message of the Democratic party is stil a big internal battle.

Will the Repugs keep pushing legislations to hobble the Internet? Crack down more on dissent? Allow even more fascist (corporate) control of media? You bet. Will the Dems as a party still having a fillibuster power allow this...? So far, they have.

That ABC 9/11 Docu-lie is, I suspect, in part the gloves coming off of the corporate propoganda machine. They cannot allow the rise of true people powered politics that the Internet is bringing about. They may no longer feel comfortable with Bush, that much is obvious, but they are even less compfortable with an enegrgized, liberal progressive Democratic party (or whatever party can take that mantle). They may be starting to loose control of the Dems. I believe they would rather risk sinking the ship of state than share their place on the bridge with a real Democratic Progressive people powered politics, even as we steer into the iceberg.

This is the danger that is coming full bore at us all. This is one of the first salvo's.
