"Sudan's regime sought to remove the only international military presence in Darfur yesterday when it demanded the withdrawal of all African Union troops from the war-torn region.

The AU, an alliance of all 53 African countries, has 5,000 troops and 2,000 civilian staff in Darfur. Crippled by incompetence and lack of resources, the mission has largely failed to protect the population.

Sudan VP vows resistance to UN peacekeepers

KHARTOUM (AFP) - "Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Taha has vowed the regime would maintain its opposition to a UN peacekeeping force for Darfur and hailed Hezbollah as a model of resistance, official media said.


"We have options and plans for confronting the international intervention," state news agency SUNA quoted Taha as telling a rally in the North Kordofan State capital of El-Obeid late Thursday.

This morning, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution authorizing a peacekeeping force in Darfur. The presence of a peacekeeping force is the only measure that will provide the security the people of Darfur desperately need.
