ONLINE Alternative (ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING) to Air America Radio? Please?
Edited on Sat Sep-02-06 09:37 AM by patrioticliberal
Has anyone considered starting a new alternative to Air America? HORN ain't that great. Lots of technical problems....and if you try to give them a suggestion or positive input, they simply ban you from their chatroom. So please, anyone willing to put forth the money to finance an alternative (Shoutcast based) radio station (leave Burch out of it ,please)...and have live, original programming as an alternative to AAR?

If you want the latest news it seems you have to listen to a local NPR station...(ie that TX-22 news...is that going to be announced on AAR? Probably not. Tough luck huh?).

AAR is such crap and I will not support them anymore....maybe listen to Seder on a local affiliate to show him some love, but he's moving to a crappy time slot for me too.

(he's BeachBuckeye here, I think) what his costs are.

Edited to add: Searched the posts and it looks like you know Guy James...

10. All they do is (questionably) broadcast other shows
I REALLY doubt they got permission from Sirius to broadcast Stephanie Miller.

Regardless, I'm talking about original programming. Brand new. Live.

11. The alternative: Guy James, Bernie Ward, Ray Taliaferro...
Edited on Sat Sep-02-06 09:43 AM by Human Torch
...the three greatest radio hosts working today. All three are the real deal. Not a sell-out or D.I.N.O. in the bunch. No cute comedy skits. No songs about tits.

Apologies to MM. He can be #4. And NO, the statement is not an invitation to a flame war (for the folks who like that sort of thing...not that we EVER have flame wars on DU)...It's just my effin' opinion.

All three are streamed live daily.

All three shows are "live, original programming."

All three shows are "an alternative to AAR."

And since you want to "leave out" the Web Site that offers Guy's MP3 archives, I left it out, because it's your thread. But pretty much everyone here knows where to get them.

12. I'm aware of them.
but that's not one station. I'd like one network that people could go to, online, and hear it all streamed live. Ray and Bernie will NOT let you do that because they are on ABC/Disney radio.

I'm talking about live, original programming. "The Human Torch Show"...

26. I don't know about that, but I'll guarantee this...
...if you truly feel that way, you could call his show and he would absolutely discuss it with him on the air. He'd take the call, let you have your say, and he'd respond...honestly.

:-)

Ray Taliaferro spoke at my high school in my senior year. He looked like he stepped out of the pages of Esquire or GQ...impeccably dressed and groomed, with an unmistakable swagger that comes from knowing who you are and feeling comfortable in that skin. Not arrogant, mind you, but he stepped right up to that line. Ray was a force to be reckoned with, and he wanted you to know it.

He started out with just a few brief, professional, local news reporter-type words of introduction and immediately challenged my fellow students to be themselves, take crap from no one, and to stand for what they believed in. For an hour this man breathed fire and inspired many.

patrioticliberal, I respect your opinion and your right to express it. In the years since Ray spoke at my school I've called him on the air. He's got a sharp mind, sharp wit, and sharp tongue. He's passionate about what everyone on this web site is passionate about.

I don't know anything about the Donna Brazille thing, but I'll take you at your word. The last word I'd ever use to describe Ray is "hypocrite." You may not change your opinion of him if you call his show, but at least you'll know where he stands.

I'm not perfect. You're not perfect. No one's perfect, including Ray. I respect the man, imperfections and all. Just my response to your comments, not trying to attack your opinion.

30. I've listened to people challenge him, or even praise him
And if they disagree with just one thing, he NAILS them into the ground. Even if you say "I love you Ray, but..". So no, with his huge ego, he wouldn't let you have a say. Not without insulting you and calling you stupid or retarded because of your statement.

13. there is positive alternative to all the hate and bashing......
I changed the way I look at things, and now I can't stomach the constant bashing all the time. I needed something positive, so I found Hay House Radio...where nary a word is spoken about the ruination of the country. I know in my heart the only thing I can change is myself, and for now that is going to be enough.

Public radio an alternative radio is where it is at. You can listen to a lot of different things online, like This Is Hell, or Will Am from Chicago. Lots of choices.

29. I keep hearing this over and over,
and can't for the life of my understand why (unless it's simply the extent to which the Democratic Party has been infiltrated by centrists over the past 15 years). KPFA is the straight, unfiltered news, IMHO.

Do you consider Pacifica "too left," and if so, why? I haven't heard much on Pacifica radio that couldn't have come straight out of the mouth of Mike Malloy (not in terms of vitriol, but ideas and sentiment).

Curious to hear any responses from those who have listened to Pacifica before.

They're certainly biased. If it was so good, then we wouldn't be listening to Air America would we? How come Mike didn't go to Pacifica if it is so great (thanks for the vitriol insult against Mike)

37. No insult to Mike intended -- he's the best, hands down . . . .
He's the only reason I listened to Air America (though Seder and Randi have their good moments, too). I think Malloy is a true patriot and hero, in the vein of Thomas Paine, and only wish there were more like him on the airwaves. He makes me feel sane. And I love his vitriol. Despite the word's negative connotation, I'm through with nice talk at this point and want someone who tells it straight up with no sugar-coating, and with the indignation that these subjects should raise in thinking, conscientious people.

But I do listen to Pacifica more frequently than Air America, and am a loyal financial supporter of the network. I imagine the reason Mike doesn't go to Pacifica is that they have no affiliate in his area (only a handful of stations across the country). I just don't see the bias you're talking about in Pacifica reporting. They do straight factual stories with folks on the ground in places that Air America simply doesn't pay attention to -- Haiti, Palestine, Aceh are just a few examples.

So what exactly about Pacifica radio turns you off? Seriously.

39. maybe you just need to hear the right show . . . . .
Dennis Bernstein's Flashpoints is just as fiery as Malloy. But yes, on the whole, it's more serious and less joky and "entertaining" than Air America. If it's news you want and not entertainment, however, it's top notch.

19. Sirius Satellite already has Sirius Left channel
I think it's 137 (Please correct if wrong).
They have Thom Hartman, Ed Shultz, Peter Werbe, Stephanie Miller, ...
The really popular non-AirAmericaRadio personalities.

They compete directly with AAR which is broadcasted on XM (only).

So what are we supposed to do? Are we supposed to get Sirius and XM? This is a bit pricey for those of us who live on a shoestring.

Isn't it time for DU to have a radio channel that they can stream? There are experience radio people here that could probably get the ball rolling and dig up funding.

if for no other reason, to make it much harder for the GOP to silence our voices. If we only a few alternatives, it will be much easier for us all to lose our voice. We need more....
