...in the 21st century.

Thank you, Mr. Olbermann.

For anyone who missed it, I ask:

1. For others to post video of that speech in this thread;

2. For others to post the text of that speech in this thread.

Watch it at midnight ET or on C&L when it goes up.

Tell your friends. Pass it on.
This was AMAZING. Even better than I thought it would be--and I'm biased anyway!

I was watching history in the making.
He is my generation's Edward R. Murrow.
For those who didn't get to see it, please watch Keith Olbermann's Countdown in it's repeat at midnight Eastern on MSNBC.
You won't be sorry.
Thanks, Will.

I fear too many will not hear the message, but it was brilliant and PATRIOTIC!!!

Thank you Keith Olbermann.... thank you for YOUR courage while far too many of "our" leaders are too filled with "fear!" Not a FEAR of an enemy, but FEAR that they might lose an election!

72. Here's my fan letter:"Thank you a thousand times"

Dear Mr. Olbermann:

Thank you a thousand times for your editorial "Feeling morally, intellectually confused?" tonight. You have eloquently expressed what so many of us have sputtered with varying degrees of inarticulate dismay and downright despair over the past six long years.

Back in the day -- that is, the late 1960s when I was a college student -- I used to think calling our government "fascist" was both inappropriate and historically inaccurate. In the years since then my government has periodically enraged me, but I was never, ever, afraid of my own government -- until Bush and Cheney entered the White House and began their mad career.

As of the Supreme Court decision, I knew we'd had a "bloodless coup." Isn't that what we've always said of banana republics who changed regimes without aan election, but also without shedding (much) blood? "They had a bloodless coup d'etat." That was pretty breathtaking.

Still, I don't know when it started to dawn on me that the Bush administration itself was beginning to fit the classic definition of a fascist regime: government wedded to unchecked corporatism, with the military in service to those ends alone -- and religion, quite conveniently serving to calm the consciences of the people. I do know that I recognized the blatant propaganda in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq: the constant drumbeat in the media, special graphics, special theme music -- all voluntarily provided by our "free press."

Once when I was a child I asked my mother if America could ever be conquered and made totalitarian, like the USSR or Nazi Germany. She said something I never forgot: that the danger to our nation was that we would vote in our oppressors and never recognize it until too late.

Thanks for speaking truth to power. I hope to be watching your broadcasts for years to come.

Sincerely,

(Hekate by another name)

Stalin channels Diebold and Sequoia electronic voting machines:
"It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything." - Josef Stalin

Teddy Roosevelt on dissent:
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else." – Teddy Roosevelt in the Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918

86. Absolutely you can. If a foreign nation had marched in & taken our liberty
-- shredded the Bill of Rights the way the Bush admin has done, the American populace would have risen up in righteous wrath to expel the invaders, and blood would have flowed in the streets of our cities.

Instead, in the name of security we have ceded our rights hand over fist. I don't advocate violence, ever, but I do think we as a people are confused. We are accustomed to peace and good order, we are accustomed to believing we are a nation of laws, and we are accustomed to believing those laws protect us. We are accustomed to orderly transitions of power via democratic elections.

We are confused because all of our expectations have been subverted and turned on their heads, starting with Bush's "election".

Keith Olbermann did a good job of naming reality tonight.

Hekate

60. This comment sent chills up my spine:
"But variations of it have faced our forefathers, when men like Nixon and McCarthy and Curtis LeMay have darkened our skies and obscured our flag. Note -- with hope in your heart — that those earlier Americans always found their way to the light, and we can, too."

70. Damn, that was f**king GREAT!!!
I don't get MSNBC on cable but I do hear quite a bit about Keith Olbermann. He is a true patriot; America needs more journalists like him. This needs to be shown to EVERY Democrat running for office; it may just put some starch in their shorts and let them know the true meaning of political courage for once!!! Thanks for the link on this thread, it was duly bookmarked and the word spread!!!

71. Absolutely telling that Mr. Olbermann didn't refer to Bush
as "his" president or "the" president, but rather "your president" when addressing Rumsfeld.

80. I just watched the rerun.
Had a show to do earlier and misssed the original airing.

I have goosebumps, a lump in my throat and an email of the transcript and a link to the vidoe being sent to a 5000-person mailing list.

Phenomenal. I'd even say monumental. He was so angry and on target. I hope the Dems get a clue -- what Keith said is what needs to be said, over and over.

Thank you, Keith Olberman!!

That was a wonderful, impassioned, and oh-so-true speech. Salve for the deep wounds this country is nursing. This needs to be seen far and wide, over and over.

84. Whattya bet - they fire Olbermann in the next 2 months?
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 01:33 AM by Major Hogwash
They have to silence him, ya know.

They have to, or else the truth just might get out.
They can't afford that.
Not now, not with elections coming up in just, oh, 68 days.

Senator Roberts has held onto the pre-war intelligence report like it is a pirate map to some sunken treasure chest, he ain't going to release his grip on it.
Why can't they keep people like Olbermann quiet like Senator Roberts?

So, why would the networks let a guy like Keith go on tv and speak to the people about dissent like that?
That doesn't serve their purpose.
That doesn't help them.
That doesn't look good.
It's untidy.

Maybe, someone will call Olbermann "macaca" and then they can make an excuse that they thought his nickname was Keith "Macaca" Olbermann.

Where's Coultergiest to call Keith un-American for disagreeing with our beloved Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld?
Why hasn't Bill O'Reilly called Keith French lately?
Why is Rush Limbaugh so upset about colleges teaching hate, when he knows that Keith went to college?!

Just put two and two together, using modern neocon math, and you get one.
Yes, you started with two, and then added two more, but now you have just one.
So, where did the other three go?
Why, they're missing!
Just like the billions of dollars we are missing that was allocated to rebuilding Iraq after we blew Iraq up.
Halliburton probably has them, but we'll never know, because we aren't supposed to know!
We are the people, and we don't need to know!
Just listen to our leaders, and don't worry, be happy.

If Keith thinks this is going to be ignored, he's sadly mistaken.
The one thing that the Bush admin doesn't like is dissenters.
And it doesn't matter if they are from within their organization, on board, as it were.
No, they can even "reach out and touch someone" from outside of their organization.

Just ask Mike Malloy.

90. Sadly, you may be right...
...intelligent dissent, which has been lacking for years in the mainstream media (where are Bernstein and Woodward when you need them) for years has suddenly been resurrected in the eloquence of Keith Olbermann's deadly accurate commentary. I'm sure the Bushies will do all in their power to squash this voice of reason in the forest of meek compliance.

“The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus become vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State”
Joseph Goebbels, propaganda minister to Adolph Hitler

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

88. The lump in my throat grew larger and larger...
...until it threatened to choke me. It's a rarity in my adult life when a mere speech can bring tears to my cynical eyes. Keith Olbermann's historic rant did just that, and more.

You're correct - we witnessed a Murrow moment tonight. Mark your calendars.

Bravo, Keith. Bravo...

93. I'm not so sure about that...
he might just pull something else out of his pocket in the near future. Don't you think BushCo might try to get some extra political mileage out of the 5th anniversary of 9/11? Betcha that'll push his "outrage" meter into the red zone in no time flat.

Not dissing what he did last night in any way, shape, or form, just sayin'...
