(rant) They hate us, they hate us, they hate us.
For pete's SAKE.

They hate us, says Holy Joe, whether we're Democrat or Republican or Independent.
They hate us, say the GOPers, for our freedoms.

They hate us. They want to kill us.

SO THE FUCK WHAT?!

Psychos in our own country want to kill us. Wild animals want to kill us. Diseases want to kill us. The momentum of speeding cars wants to kill us.

We still cross the damn street!

What is it about being killed by "terrorists" that is so much scarier than being killed by anything else?

When you're dead, you're dead! What does it matter what's killed you?

Isn't it when you're ALIVE that matters?

Why don't we focus our energy on what we can do while we're ALIVE?

For fuck's SAKE!

23. That's the truth, sinkingfeeling
The OP is true, as well. Living is dangerous. It always has been, and always will be. We could be struck by lightening, killed by bees or wasps, fall from a ladder, and so many other things. They might hate us, but it's sure not because of our "freedoms", and under Bush we are hated more and more every day. Republicans are just cowards.

Here are the odds of meeting one's demise in a particular way, from CDC data: http://www.anotherperspective.org/advoc530.html

1 in 88,000 of a terrorist attack
1 in 1,500,000 of a terrorist-caused shopping mall disaster assuming one such incident a week and you shop two hours a week
1 in 55,000,000 in a terrorist-caused plane disaster assuming one such incident a month and you fly once a month

1 in 55,928 of death by lightning
1 in 20,605 in your clothes igniting
1 in 10,455 of dying in your bathtub
1 in 10,010 by falling from a ladder or scaffolding
1 in 9,396 due to excessive heat
1 in 8,389 due to excessive cold
1 in 7,972 in a drowning accident
1 in 6,842 in a railway accident.

So why aren't we banning bathtubs and ladders and trains?

That's not to say that we should completely ignore the crazy fuckers like bin Laden who are obviously sincere about wanting to cause us harm. But those assholes know they can't kill more than a relatively small number of us, so the whole point of their actions is to scare us (which is why they call it *terrorism*, duh!). And, although the odds that any single person will be killed by terrorists are minuscule, they have succeeded very well in scaring the idiots and allowing the politicians to use that fear for their own purposes.

So, Joe, you're scared. Can we say, therefore, that you have Let The Terrorists Win? And why do you hate America?

12. Back in the 80's, the commies wanted to kill us.
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 12:48 PM by VolcanoJen
We watched really lame movies like "The Day After" and shivered in fear because evil Commies hated us and wanted to kill us.

We're still here.

And, this is something that's always pissed me off... during the Cold War, when shit really was dangerous and the threat of nuclear holocaust felt real and tangible, we didn't have to endure Patriot Acts or Illegal Wiretapping or constant fearmongering for the sake of asshole politicians holding onto their power.

As fucking awful as Reagan was, he didn't do that. Sure, he was crafty and manipulative and sold a kind-of phony optimism, but dammit, he didn't hold Americans by their throats and say "The other guy wants the Commies to kill you."

We're still here. We're gonna be here long after this crooked administration is gone, too.

No matter how much "they" hate us.

Awesome rant, Witch!

I'm really seriously starting to look at a career arc that will get me out of here once my kid is out of school. I don't feel comfortable here anymore. The social contract is broken and all that is left is class war.

22. A comparison
There were about 3,000 people killed on 9/11. Since then, over 100,000 have been killed by automobile accidents. I'm not saying that what happened on 9/11 wasn't terrible, but statistically, it was a bare sliver of the total number of U.S. deaths in 2001.

Republicans want us afraid afraid afraid. Fuck them, I'm tired of being afraid.

24. We need an enemy and a scapegoat
to make us feel powerful, and to project our "sin" onto.

It's been this way since tribal times.

"Good" Leaders know how to manipulate, exploit, and propagandize this tendency to get the approval of the populace to do whatever the fuck they want.

The evolution of Liberalism (and Love itself, really) is the force that Counters this tendency.
(It starts with how a society treats its children, but that's a topic for another post)

I am actually optimistic, because as horrible as the current situation is, the cabal is having to work really, really hard, and catapult more propaganda than ever before in history -- and support for the war is still rather anemic. Believe it or not, "society" has evolved enough to subsume the impulses for War; we're just now seeing the "death throes" if you will, and playing out in slow motion like this is agonizing. I know it seems hopeless but no group of neocons/neolibs can stall the evolution of human consciousness; it's a force that is just too massive.

There is that little problem about nukes, however. hmm.

25. When they are 10,000 miles away it does seem stupid to worry
so much about them wanting to kill us. So what, if they can't?

We could worry about it, just not as much as we might worry about something more likley to kill us, like an auto accident, or cancer.

True, we let ourselves get bent out of shape before thinking. If we must be frightened of something, it should logically be the automobile or disease. There are a zillion things that can go wrong with the human body! And there are tons of terrible drivers out there!

Besides, they are hearing the same thing. That we want to destroy their way of life and kill them. And at this point, they have more to fear, because we have a much better chance of success at killing them.
