Carlyle Group strong candidate for US Ports Purchase
Among the strongest contenders for inclusion in the second round of bidding are understood to be the infrastructure fund of Morgan Stanley, the investment bank; Carlyle Group, the private equity group; and Carrix, parent of SSA Marine, a Seattle-based container terminal operator. The shortlist marks the start of the most intense phase of the sale process for the five container terminal operations and other US cargo and passenger-handling businesses. DP World acquired the businesses as part of its takeover this year of the P&O, the UK container terminal... http://www.gulf-news.com/business/Shipping/10063336.html

Now, looks like you could have the bin Laden family owning our ports... or, God knows who...

It's a private equity firm, so they don't have to name their ownership! :grr:

6. What happens when carlyle own everything
Will that be capitalism? Will it be democracy when a shadowy group of retired figures
on telephones rule the world without any oversight or transparency. Is that the new
definition of democracy, that political economy is not political, and that slavery can
be reintroduced if we erase debate by isolating people in to jobs and a social structure
designed to disenfranchise genuine social solidarity.

8. Whenever Carlyle is mentioned I remind that a Jimmy CARTER staffer
co-founded it. I've never grokked why he, David RUBENSTEIN, stocked his company with Repukes instead of making money for Dems.

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article3994.htm

.... In a column posted yesterday on Salon.com, Joe Conason writes: "Preferring to avoid public scrutiny for obvious reasons, executives at the Carlyle Group usually say nothing about their firm's connections with the Bush dynasty. But last April 23, Carlyle managing director David Rubenstein spoke quite frankly about the comfy sinecure he provided to George W. Bush more than a decade ago -- and how useless Bush turned out to be. Whether he knew it or not, Rubenstein's remarks to the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association were recorded."

Rubenstein said, "We put (Bush) on the board and (he) spent three years. Came to all the meetings. Told a lot of jokes. Not that many clean ones. And after a while I kind of said to him, after about three years - you know, I'm not sure this is really for you. Maybe you should do something else. Because I don't think you're adding that much value to the board. You don't know that much about the company.

Rubenstein continued: "He said, 'Well, I think I'm getting out of this business anyway. And I don't really like it that much. So I'm probably going to resign from the board.' And I said, thanks - didn't think I'd ever see him again. His name is George W. Bush. He became President of the United States. So you know if you said to me, name 25 million people who would maybe be President of the United States, he wouldn't have been in that category. So you never know. Anyway, I haven't been invited to the White House for any things." ....

15. I'm shocked, shocked.
Dubai is, of course, a major investor in the Carlyle Group.

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over): The oil-rich United Arab Emirates is a major investor in The Carlyle Group, the private equity investment firm where President Bush’s father once served as senior adviser and is a who’s who of former high-level government officials. Just last year, Dubai International Capital, a government-backed buyout firm, invested in an $8 billion Carlyle fund.
