Megadeth targets United Nations on new album
NEW YORK (Billboard) - Heavy metal maven Dave Mustaine is so angry with the United Nations that he is naming his group Megadeth's next album "United Abominations."

"I was watching TV and saw the trucks that said 'UN' on them and said, 'Man, you are so uncool, ineffective, anything," the singer/guitarist said in a recent Billboard interview.

"I thought, 'Wow, I've got to run with this. I got it -- United Abominations, 'cause it's an abomination what they're doing!"

The longtime bane of American conservatives, the United Nations has been criticized for its slow responses to humanitarian crises in hot spots such as Darfur and Rwanda. U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan recently expressed frustration that the group took so long to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hizbollah in Lebanon.

1. Well, Dave Mustaine...
Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 12:50 AM by kysrsoze
When the U.S., which provides most of the U.N.'s money and has veto power over everything, doesn't want to play ball and sends an ambassador who wants to wreck the U.N., what do you expect? The Lebanon thing is a mess cause we wouldn't go along with the ceasefire for quite some time. I'd say they've done their best to counter our ridiculous notions, so they deserve SOME credit. What a fool.

8. the U.S. does not, actually, "provide most of the UN's money"
in fact, according to Source Watch:

"For a number of years the United States Congress has refused to authorise payment of the United States' UN dues, in order to try to extract reforms from the organization and a reduction in the US assessment. . . . U.S. arrears to the UN currently total over $1.3 billion."

True enough that's it's ridiculous to blame the entire UN for obstructionist assholes like Bolton, however.

12. The US also does not supply most of the UN's child rapers
Sorry, the UN lost me in Congo, Darfur, Zimbabwe, Mauritania, Niger....

Enough's enough.

Peace.

13. yeah, that makes a lot of sense, what a logical argument
:eyes:

Perhaps you can explain what the United States and Britain and the other members of the Security Council have done to address those issues? With links, etc.

Oddly enough, the U.S. does provide a substantial portion of Iraq's child rapists and murderers. Damn that U.N. for not doing anything about that, either, huh?

16. The history of the United States in re: UN support.
In the 1960s I became aware of the UN, its actual mission, and the petulant chile role the US played, for years at a time. The US has always wanted to own the UN and has done its absolute damnedest to arrange it.

Demand that the United Nations, as though it were a unique, separate entity, fulfill some important national task and then refuse to chip in the money to do it ar even pay up its past due pledges and then criticize the hell out of it because the job wasn't done or done the way the US says it should be.

I could not be sec gen at all--I'd end up telling a bunch of people to piss up a rope.

18. Not only refuse to fund it, but prevent it from doing anything relevant
and then blame the entire institution because the world's only "superpower" and its Security Council allies has rendered it ineffectual.

I don't expect anything more from freepers and brain-damaged musicians, but it's always disconcerting to see their talking points echoed here.

17. The subject was the UN, not the US
Technically, yours is the illogical response. It's called a "red herring." :*

See http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/

We all know that the US has a devil's list of failings, and I'm not here to defend the US (and couldn't if I wanted to). But US-caused mischief is a different thread.

Just a thought, but we can and must condemn the failings of the UN regardless of what the US has done. Corrupt child rapers don't get a free pass in my book and I am surprised to hear they do in yours. And I'm only scratching the surface of what's been done (or not done) in the UN's name.

Can anyone say Rwanda?

Peace.

19. no, you brought up "child rapers" in other parts of the world and blamed
the UN. I mentioned that the U.S. was raping and murdering children in Iraq, also a matter for the U.N. -- if it was any other nation than the world's only superpower.

Again, I want you to explain what the U.S., which dominates the U.N., has done about Rwanda? Or Darfur? What action do you expect the U.N. to take without U.S. approval, support, and funding?

21. Umm, ok
I find that nothing useful ever comes from discussions with those who use logical fallacies to "prove" something, so I'm going to sign off this thread now.

If you get bored, try googling "UN + child + rape" and follow a few of the links. I promise I won't tell. O8)

Peace.

22. Yes, okay, you can't answer in a rational fashion
It's a very simple question: What do you expect the U.N. to do about those issues without the support and funding of its most powerful member? Why is that so difficult for you to answer?

You might try googling that, instead of the logical fallacies of your own creation.

3. He's a fundie now.
The man can play guitar like few others but after the accident with his arm he's all fucked up in the brain. And to think he actually had a message back in the 80's. Songs like Holy War...The Punishment Due and Hangar 18 were ahead of their time.

a worthy project for photoshoppers. Maybe start with the Killing is my Business album. It is pretty much the neo-con agenda in See Spot Run form.

'Man, you are so uncool, ineffective, anything,"

"I thought, 'Wow, I've got to run with this. I got it -- United Abominations, 'cause it's an abomination what they're doing!"

"...One of my heroes growing up was Kiss..."

9. Agreed. He sounds like school girl
Sadder considering he also wrote this.

2. Symphony Of Destruction

You take a mortal man,
And put him in control
Watch him become a god
Watch peoples heads a'roll
A'roll...

Just like the Pied Piper
Led rats through the streets
We dance like marionettes
Swaying to the Symphony ...
Of Destruction

Acting like a robot
Its metal brain corrodes
You try to take its pulse
Before the head explodes
Explodes...

The earth starts to rumble
World powers fall
A'warring for the heavens
A peaceful man stands tall
Tall...

And

1. Holy Wars...The Punishment Due

Brother will kill brother
Spilling blood across the land
Killing for religion
Something I don't understand

Fools like me, who cross the sea
And come to foreign lands
Ask the sheep, for their beliefs
Do you kill on God's command?

A country that's divided
Surely will not stand
My past erased, no more disgrace
No foolish naive stand

The end is near, it's crystal clear
Part of the master plan
Don't look now to Israel
It might be in your homelands

Holy wars

Upon my podium, as the
Know it all scholar
Down in my seat of judgement
Gavel's bang, uphold the law
Up on my soapbox, a leader
Out to change the world
Down in my pulpit as the holier
Than-thou-could-be-messenger of God

Wage the war on organized crime
Sneak attacks, repel down the rocks
Behind the lines
Some people risk to employ me
Some people live to destroy me
Either way they die.

They killed my wife, and my baby
With hopes to enslave me
First mistake...last mistake!
Paid by the alliance, to slay all the giants
Next mistake...no more mistakes!

Fill the cracks in, with judicial granite
Because I don't say it, don't mean I ain't
Thinkin'it
Next thing you know, they'll take my thoughts away
I know what I said, now I must scream of the overdose
And the lack of mercy killings.

It easy to attack the guy given his 'juvenile' way of talking.

But we cannot deny that he used to write intelligent lyrics.

Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 02:08 AM by TheWatcher
This is truly a tragedy, and I mean that. Dead serious.

Like them or not, Dave used to have some really good messages in his music, and he was once on our side.

It wasn't but just a couple of years ago I heard him absoltuely railing on Bush, and warning of things to come if he stayed in power.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Is the entire world just going insane? Has Dave gone to the Dark Side?

Next we will hear Rob Halford has become a Log Cabin Republican.

The most mean, self-destructive, paranoic bag of impulses in metal now has fundiehood added to the mix. So now Dave's in Bush's corner and spouts Limbaughisms like a firehose. He's hopeless.

With quotes like these, I'm honestly surprised that this guy didn't think that "Abominations" was just the name of a snowman.

From the real culprits. The UN has no power of it's own, and the starvation of funds forced by the UK and the US makes it even harder to get things done.

Dave Mustaine has the worst voice in music, ever, with the possible exceptions of Yoko Ono and Linda McCartney.
