2. Ask him who his ancestors are? Were they Irish? German?
French? Because his people didn't come over her speaking English, they probably kept their native language for a very long time. Tell him we are not in Nazi Germany.....

5. Here is what I emailed my sister...
It’s probably true. Most Democrats oppose, as do I, making English an official language. There are several reasons. It limits those who speak another language from talking with the government. This includes voting, education, heath and welfare, financial assistance in cases such as social security, police assistance and can have an impact on fundamental rights. Not only would it isolate millions of people who speak another language, these laws would fail to help those who need it integrate into American society. 97% of the population is proficient in the English language and to legislate it is unnecessary. Free English classes are offered all over the country for people from a variety of countries. In fact, people are learning the language at a faster rate than in previous generations.

The United States has thrived for over 200 years without this stupid law. What’s the need for it now?

To an extent, I find laws such as these inherently racist. Some people believe English should be the only language spoken. I think back to the time when Native American children were separated from their families, sent to a far away school and they were forbidden to speak in their native tongue. These languages have suffered as a result. As the elders die, that’s fewer and fewer who still speak the native tongue. The Salish language is a prime example. It has suffered and degraded over time.

I think this would also discourage people from wanting to learn a second language such as Spanish. With an attitude of ‘English only’ comes an intolerance for other languages and people from other countries. Also, when Americans go overseas for an extended length of time, they can expect to be treated the same exact way for not learning that native language of the country they are in.

As you can see, there is no real benefit to having English as an official language other than it sounds nice and very American.

The Senate wasn't voting on giving benefits to illegal aliens.

9. I always google a portion
Key phrase or alleged author in quotes. This turns up not only the debunks, but also gives me a clue where they're getting it from. It's amazing how many RW email and forum spams depend on information that is not only non-factual, but often counter-factual.

12. Google is our friend.
I do that too. The same tactic can often be used to determine the website from which the email took its information, or mis-information.

11. Here's some help.

Here is an editorial about the 'official language' issue:

http://www.democrats.com/node/8972

Ask him if he's more concerned about this, or about the minimum wage that hasn't been raised in 10 years. Or the 7 million more Americans without health insurance since 2000. Or the biggest deficits in US history.

Here's the Snopes article about the Social Security part, which tofunut already supplied:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/socialsecurity.asp

Tell him it might not matter if formerly illegal workers are given credit for payments they made into the Social Security system. This is because Junior is going to gut Social Security before he is out of office. Democrats will stop him if they win a majority in either the House or Senate this year.

13. TY all, here's my reply
A bit of clarification first. I hadn't seen this guy for at least 25 years. An old high school aquaintance. In HS he was a gear head. I believe that he drove a semi soon after. NOT to denigrate gearheads or truckers, there are many of both on this board who "get" it.... I saw this guy for the 1st time in decades on July 4th. Like I said, good guy in general. By far not the sharpest knife in the drawer and apparently incurious...

Anyway, a good blue collar guy who is uninformed... Here's what I wrote back, and I thank you all (reply all, of course.)

not quite true: http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/socialsecurity.asp

by the way, it's the republicans that love the cheap labor... the fat cat big corporate contributors want their "domestics" and the corporations and small businesses want their cheap labor.... remember, bush wanted amnesty... 8 million workers at $5 an hour will lower wages for everyone else... and raise profits and dividends for the owners.... republican contributors....

I used to think bush was totally inept....

but i now see the record profits for the oil industry... profits higher than any company or corporation have ever seen.... chevron's pres retiring with a $400,000,000.00 retirement package... halliburton stock prices up over 200%, revenues up 400%, profits up....

these fuckers know exactly what they are doing... and it ain't good for you or me....
