I saw both of these the other day.
"JESUS IS COMING...SOON!"
" WHY WORRY? God is in charge!"
I don't know where to begin. But I'll start with a heavy, heavy sigh.
The scary part is there seem to be a lot of folks that really, really believe this. Please, no flames.

Can't take it with ya, but no reason to send it off to my creditors. They won't need it either.

| 10. End Days --What a crock of shit |
|
The future is what we make it. We humans, especially Americans, have the ability to end life on earth, with atomic weapons or pollution. We also have the ability to make earth a wonderful place for everyone to live. It's our choice, not some BS end days shit. The possibility of a meteor stricking the earth can conceivably be dealt with, global warming, pollution and war are the enemy.

Living through that crap with a now ex-friend. I think it sucks, and they figure it out soon. But they won't and we're stuck with them.

a series of signs telling you that Jesus was coming. The higher you went up the mountains the closer Jesus was getting.
I laugh just as hard at the bumper stickers today as I did back then at the Jesus is coming signs in the Smokies.
I do miss the Burma Shave signs though. "Here lies pa, pa loved women, ma found pa, with one swimmin, here lies pa. Burma Sahve"

You flame those who hold such beliefs (and there are some here on DU who do), then seek refuge in a plea not to be flamed yourself. All while showing a huge disconnect from Western history by seeming to imply such belief is somehow a sign of troubles in these days alone and not the recurring themes they are that reverberate across millenia. Ah, yes. . . a heavy sigh in the face of ignorance and muddled thought.

Why worry? God's in charge!
Then why are they forcing TERRAH TERRAH down our throats?
I swear to God, the most fundamentalist Christians are the most afraid to die. I wonder why that is?

Is when irresponsible twits use the parousia as an excuse to absolve themselves from doing anything about anything. "Oh, it's God's will, no use trying to change things. Those poor people are supposed to be poor. Jesus himself said that the poor will be with us always. Can't go against God's will, can you? Besides, it's all going to be over soon because Jesus is coming to pull all us good people out of this cosmic shitstorm in the nick of time."
Even though I'm a pacifist, these kinds of sentiments (though never quite so baldly stated) just make me want to smack the speaker. It being God's will that they deserve a celestial dope slap, and the Almighty is probably just too busy to attend to it just this second, so I'll step into the breach.
Meanwhile, it can be instructive to point such folks to Amos 5:18-24, which ends with the famous passage quoted by Dr. King to let justice roll down like waters and righteousness in a mighty stream. The passage begins, though, with a remonstrance against people who "desire" the Day of the Lord, and explains that the Day of the Lord is darkness and not light.
