10. It makes me sick the way they made her all up
so she looked like she was a forty year old floozy. She was the child of a woman who needed to make her kid into some "beauty queen" so she could live vicariously through her. I can't stand that crap. The mothers always defend this practice by saying that the child really wants to do it. WTF?? I have two daughters and I would never dream of it. Either she drew the attention of some maniac to her child or the father was the one who did it. Either way I feel badly for the poor child.

If it sells, if the audience wants to hear about it till it drives sane folks bonkers, it WILL command the headlines and fill the pages and the TV screens.

And SOME people will get rich off of the whole sad, sickening, outrageous scene, no doubt.

She's not a federal judge ruling that NSA spying on Americans is unconstitutional.

She's not Iraq coverage.

She's not a sluggish economy.

She's not global warming.

She's not violation of Geneva Convention.

She's not investigative journalism.

That is very much a part of my interest -- and other people on DU who post about the case. The rest of my interest is thinking a crime was covered up, and hopping for some belated justice to the victim.

I don't think John Karr had anything to do withe her death, btw.

21. I thought of that, but it also dawned on me that...
She was murdered a little less than 9 years ago. An 18-21 year old soldier probably wouldn't have been following the news back then and very well might wonder who she was.

But aside from that thought, I don't think the cartoonist is making a literal suggestion that dead soldiers would be having this thought (were they alive to think it of course). It's clearly a visual way of representing the disproportionate media coverage. I don't see it as a comparison between relative value of lives. It is nothing more than an indictment against the media...and maybe the Bush administration's illegal war perhaps.

17. Jon Benet was a precious child that should still be living
Edited on Mon Aug-21-06 02:49 PM by MysteryToMyself
It is too bad the Media exploit her death and use it to avoid mentioning other Bushite disasters. It is also too bad that they try and convict people on the air. People they do that to cannot get a fair trial.

We need to put lots of money and focus on why there are serial killers of women and children. There is a small percent of children murdered by sexual perverts each year. It seems like a lot are because the Media shows it so much, but most die at the hands of their parents. Fox says that 400 children a year die.

Jon Benet seems to be enjoying her "dressing up". Different strokes for different folks. They had the money and if she and Patsy enjoyed it, why not? We played dress up when my sisters and I were little. I would have loved to have done what Jon Benet did when I was small.

23. Her parents abused her and then she was murdered.
A very sad story. But she is just ONE child who died almost 10 years ago.

Last month 3500 Iraqis died in the US-created quagmire. It was the highest month of civilian casualties ever in Iraq. A couple weeks ago more than 1000 Lebanese (50-75% children) died in the US-backed invasion of Lebanon. And our pretzledent has no plan to stop it while he is in office.

The difference is that we can do nothing about Jonbenet but we are responsible for all the deaths in the Middle East. Our media is all about glamour and entertainment rather than enlightenment.

And yes, she was an abused child. A 5 or 6 year-old should not be made up to look like this FOR MONEY:

I care about our troops, I care about the people of Israel and Lebanon but I also care about a murdered American child who has never seen justice and her parents who were unfairly witch-hunted based on no real evidence. Sure, the media has exploited JonBenet to a sickening degree but still, miscarriage of justice always concerns me.

42. The shows have pre-empted everything for 4 or more days
because of the sensationalistic nature of her case. The little girl is being exploited just like the helpless Terry Schaivo was exploited, and the way Tookie Williams was exploited. That is a miscarraige, too. These people are just props for the entertainment news.

Americans value of the individual over the collective has developed into this sickening loss of decorum and a balanced perspective. The whole country must want to escape the real world to put up with this type of coverage.

U.S. apologetic over Okinawa rape
Two sailors, one Marine accused

September 19, 1995

May Lee From Correspondent May Lee

TOKYO (CNN) -- The United States military is struggling to redeem itself after the alleged abduction and rape of a 12- year-old girl by three U.S. servicemen in Okinawa on September 4.

In a private meeting with Gov. Masahide Ota of Okinawa, U.S. Ambassador Walter Mondale expressed regret. The U.S. Embassy issued a statement saying Mondale offered, "on behalf of the U.S. government, sincere apologies for the suffering this crime has brought to the child, her family and the people of Okinawa Prefecture."

***

More apologies were made by the commander of the U.S. forces in Japan, who was attending a "friendship dinner" co-hosted by U.S. and Japanese military forces. "As the U.S. has always had friendly relations with Japan, they should know that this criminal act does not stand for America and will not be tolerated by us," Gen. Richard Myers said.

But for the people of Okinawa, who have always felt uneasy about the strong U.S. military presence, apologies aren't enough. "I can't even begin to imagine how much pain and anger the young girl is feeling," one woman said.

26. Its sad that MSM is exploiting
the unfortunate death of a child to get off the REAL stories of the day. Im not saying she or any other child that has been killed isnt worth a notable mention on news but not 24/7. But then we must look at MSM as a whole, have they bothered to be "fair and balanced" trustworthy and open with the public in the last five years? I was a little kid during the Nam era but I remember the nightly news showing the good, bad and the ugly about that war, now all you hear is * throwing a hissy fit when confronted with talks about getting out.
I just wonder if they are going to drag this child's name through the mud of MSM news for the next two years.

She didn't ask for all of this publicity. This thread is disgraceful.

The media is overboard, but the cartoon would have been better directed at THE MEDIA, not JonBenet herself. I'm sure she'd rather be alive and 16 years old now living her life than be a 10 year post mortem headline.

41. She WAS an innocent child who was murdered by a monster yet
unidentified. She didn't ask for any of this shit and this thread is a disgrace. Her murder and the war in Iraq are SEPARATE issues. True, the media fixation and tabloid journalism surrounding this case is despicable, but I was one person hoping and praying that this Karr sociopath was indeed the killer and that justice and closure could finally come to this sordid and sad case.

Anyone who makes light of a six year old's murder sucks, IMO, whether they're BFEE folks or Liberal fellow travelers.

Bash the MSM all you want, they deserve it. But the little girl was MORE innocent than the people who VOLUNTARILY join the armed forces. I served in the Armed Forces for 12 years. They make it clear from Day One that we could go to war at any time. It's no surprise to anyone who joins.

You can whine and moan that the MSM doesn't do 24/7 coverage of the dead soldiers, but to call a little murdered girl a "$5 whore" or suggest that her parents were "training her to be one" is sickening and disgusting.

53. Well it isn't like she is dressed in a sexy bikini
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 09:59 PM by MysteryToMyself
She is dressed like a little girl dressed up like an attractive, southern woman. She isn't wearing sheer night clothing and things I think of as far as sexy.

To me it is just a rich girl's version of what we did as little girls. We would put on old fashioned long skirts & tops and too big heels and then powder & lipstick and play house for hours. Our baby sister was our baby and we had dolls too.

Jon B was competing with professional girls vying to win. But, I can't see how it was anything to do with sex, any more than you would think of a woman as sexy in the same clothing. She did look like a beautiful woman, but a person would know she wasn't. It was like they were making a short movie in a way and everyone tried to be creative in the way they dressed and sang their songs. Like Vaudville....

I bet she would have won a beauty contest had she grown up. It seems it would give a little girl self assurance to do that. She may have been a movie star as an adult.

It was similar to taking your dog to a dog show, but it was better because Patsy said on TV that JonB and her had a lot of fun doing the shows.

I don't think you are a pedophile...you just aren't thinking when you say that. She looks more like a movie star with makeup on. You don't see that in every day life and it would be strange in every day life. She didn't dress that way at home. She looked like a plain cute kid in her home movies and pictures they have shown a little of on TV. The makeup was only for the contests.

I hope they have found the killer and the DNA matches so there will be no doubt. I think Patsy and John Ramsey have been unfairly blamed and tried on TV.

49. The mob mentality and Sex Patrol
There is probably no money made on those type of beauty padgets as some have suggested. The outfits are expensive and they have to travel a lot. Patsy said it was a fun thing her and Jonbenet could do together. I believed her.

There are a lot of films of her playing with no make up. There was some of her opening Christmas presents. The media chooses to show the made up ones. They love to feed the mob mentality and the sex patrol.

There is a sex patrol out there that would bear watching. They want to make everything into something sexually perverted. Our children will grow up not knowing what normal sex is, if they continue.
