I figured out how to get through to my republican mom!
My ranting about the environment, the war in Iraq and endangered reproductive rights (she is pro-choice) for the past several years has produced approximately the same effect as C-SPAN has on my dog. Yesterday, though, I discovered the secret to helping her (and maybe your mom, too) see the truth about the neocons:

I told them Cheney and Bush have both been caught when they didn't know the microphone was on them doing the evangelically unthinkable: CUSSING.

Any good Christian knows that their brethren might bomb, invade and occupy, but, under no circumstances, would a genuine evangelical Christian vice president tell a Congressman to "f-off" as Cheney did or let the "s" word roll off his tongue so easily that one might think he used it on a regular basis, as Bush did at the G-8.

To get back to my mom, after uh-huh-ing, glassy-eyed through my screed on warrantless wiretaps, she suddenly turned off the faucet (after I mentioned the bit about Cheney and the "f" word), put down the dishes and drew in her breath: "Really? He said that?" Her entire perception of reality was changing before my eyes.

Maybe we what we need to win the next election is a "republicans cussing" video to run on TV in the red states...

3. that is exactly what I thought
I cannot understand the mentality of people who are offended by cussing yet think invading, bombing and occupying a country unprovoked is just swell

6. It's part of the evangelical culture. No cussing, "impurity" or getting
drunk. Pretty much anything else is OK or at least understandable. It's irrational, but it's a major part of the evangelical culture. Evangelicals just don't do (or admit to doing) this stuff, and when someone does, it gives him away as a not a serious Christian.

11. What about getting drunk
and then shooting your friend in the face? Oh, and not going to the hospital to see him, but continuing to drink into the evening? Would that shock her? If she doesn't like drinking you might remind her of the number of DUIs between Poppy, Chimpy and Dickhead.

12. That's very good, but unfortunately it's not on tape.
The DUI's are good, too. I'll have to bring that up next time.

30. About the Cheney shooting thing
My folks told me in all seriousness that the reason Cheney didn't go to the hospital with birdshot man was because it would have caused too much uproar in the emergency room and it was better that they all stayed away. Couldn't have the VP going to some pudunk emergency room to see if his victim - um friend - was still alive. Imagine the media circus! The doctors would be so star struck about the VP's presence that they would abandon their positions and then nobody would be helped.

No, it was much better that Cheney stayed away from the doctors who were helping his buddy.

Compassionate conservative, my hiney.

22. Don't forget
<<I cannot understand the mentality of people who are offended by cussing yet think invading, bombing and occupying a country unprovoked is just swell>>

What about thinking that denying Americans food, housing, and medical insurance is just swell? It's not just Iraqis dying here, folks...Bush is an equal-opportunity killer. :(

5. Amazing.
Iraq, or Katrina, or 9-11, or the lack of health care, as well as the wiping of their stupid repub asses on the Constitution doesn't do it, but cussing does.

8. I think it's because it betrays their hypocrisy. Evangelicals just don't
talk like that. If the president cusses, he cannot be a true evangelical. I think that's the real shock. The emperor's new church clothes have turned into nothing.

10. There's something to this.
I think there are an enormous number of nice people like your Mom who are less interested in a candidate's policies than in whether or not the candidate strikes them as decent.

I was in a conversation with one of these salt-of-the-earth type guys, a life-long Republican who BTW says he's sorry he voted for Bush and this year won't be voting straight party line. You wanna know why he voted for Bush the second time? Because, he said, there was just something he didn't like about Theresa Heinz Kerry. He said he couldn't even tell you what it was, just that he thought Laura Bush would make a better First Lady.

There are a lot of people like this. And we don't need to dismiss them. We need to reach them.

Theresa got big-time "swift-boated" on the e-mail hate-spam circuit.

18. Sigh... I'm still working on my mom...
Today, when I went on my weekly rant with her about the Bush administration, she flat out admitted she would trade liberty for security. She doesn't mind the NSA wiretaps, even when I told her they were warrantless, that they were illegal, and that because of the FISA Act & the FISA courts, the Bush administration had all the tools they needed to conduct surveillance legally.

Two weeks ago, when we had another discussion, she stated that this country needed a strong leader to unite this country in this war...

Just completely boggles my mind how people can fall for fascist crap...
