2. 6400
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 02:17 PM by Viva_La_Revolution
Oregon
3 people
no car
300 miles a year (ride once a week to the Grocery) on edit: fixed math
no flights
$75 - $100 electric bill
60% renewable (hydro)

This doesn't ask about public transport though. I ride the bus to work, or car-pool, and the kids use the bus all the time. That would bump it up some. Water use is probably another, I know we still use too much.

on edit:
weird math

If I change the above mileage to 500, still no car...

I get a score of 10300

But if I add my roommate, and the vehicle he drives 9000 miles a year the score is 10100

3. I scored a 21,500
Larger than average? I'm hardly cooling a McMansion down here in Florida. (My bill goes to about $200 in summer stays around $75 in winter.) As for my car yeah it's an old Crown vic (1991) but really how much energy is expended to build a new hybrid? Wouldn't it be better for the environment if I drive a used car rather than buy a new one? (Okay I admit I also have a '67 dart but the chart only allows one choice and I have been flirting with a buying new car) Whose average are they measuring by? (I'm going to be nice and not ask what Al Gore's score is what with the houses and airline trips)

And really I wouldn't use the air-conditioner so much if it wasn't so hot outside. :sarcasm:

7. The point is not really how much you use, but...
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 02:23 PM by Viva_La_Revolution
how much you can reduce it. What choice can you make right now to bring that number down a little?

on edit: You can save 3% of your energy bill by turning down the air 1 degree

lots more little, easy choices here - http://www.vanityfair.com/features/general/articles/060...

Though the last 2 months of electricity usage were far more than anticipated due to the heat.

11. I don't buy the number it came up with...
31,400 for li'l ol' me who turns the heat down, the lights off and doesn't even have an air conditioner.

You can't take an electric bill from an area with the highest rates in the country and two trips to Europe a year and then say that my carbon footprint is twice the national average. And, that overpriced $100 tank of propane for cooking and hot water lasts me at least two months.

Ask me how many kilowatt hours I use, and then ask me how much EXTRA fuel it takes a plane going to Franfurt anyway to carry me along.

So, I've reduced unecessary driving even in my 35mpg car, replaced all my lights with flourescents, don't leave the TV on when I'm away to entertain the cat, and all sorts of other stuff to reduce my own energy consumption and expense.

And they still say I'm using twice the average. With stuff like this going on, who's going to take it seriously?
