NEW YORK - Bankrupt Northwest Airlines Corp. advised workers to fish in the trash for things they like or take their dates for a walk in the woods in a move to help workers facing the ax to save money.

The No. 5 U.S. carrier, which has slashed most employees' pay and is looking to cut jobs as it prepares to exit bankruptcy, put the tips in a booklet handed out to about 50 workers and posted for a time on its employee Web site.

The four-page booklet, "Preparing for a Financial Setback" contained suggestions such as shopping in thrift stores, taking "a date for a walk along the beach or in the woods" and not being "shy about pulling something you like out of the trash."

"If you have saved some money, pat yourself on the back -- you deserve it," the booklet reads. "Take out only what you need and spend prudently."

I wonder how the executives were compensated.

What I can't understand is why its unions didn't band together. Each one went it alone, thinking it was the only one that wouldn't get screwed, and NWA picked 'em off one by one. If they'd all stood together with the mechanics, it would have ended very differently.

People think that a company that gives them this book is going to treat them right? JAYZUS H. CHRIST.

I find it absolutely amazing that we've not had any corporate headquarters blown up with some of the shit that these corporations pull on their employees. Frankly, if I were a NW employee, I'd take that little dumpster diving suggestion and give it to a hungry reporter so that they could make it a front page headline.

And sadly, this sort of "advice" is going to be in the future of a lot of employees, as more and more jobs are cut or outsourced.

22. I hate to be the one to say it, but

my experience with NW Airlines is that most of their employees (those that deal with the public, anyway) OUGHT to be diving in dumpsters, or at least doing some other kind of work that doesn't require a pleasant demeanor and the desire to actually assist the customers. NW is a crappy airline, and its employees are almost universally unhelpful, indifferent, incompetent and unpleasant. Maybe working for a company as shitty as Northworst makes you surly--it wouldn't surprise me. But that's still no reason to take it out on the customers. Really, the current state of the airlines in this country is a scandal; with the exception of Southwest, the business model appears to be to make the experience of flying as excruciating as possible.
