As a parent who has a child that was born facially different from most, I find this thread appaling. DU has always been the place of tolerance and champions those who are different. To read the comments makes me furious. It is obvious you have never had any interaction with an indivdual is who is facially different nor do you even comprehend what they go through,

My son was born with a plexiform tumor and from the time he was a week old until he entered middle school, not one day went by with ignoranat jackass making remarks like the ones posted here. Some remarks were more cruel, such as freak and monster baby, and later monster boy. People told us we should not bring him into restaurants as he caused them to lose thier appetites. I thank God that the management backed us up.

How would you like to hear at least once a week, "Halloween is over, take off the mask." I am sure many of you have seen the movie Mask, the one with Cher.

I usually enjoy my visits to the DU but this time, I am ashamed to be associated with this site.

Flame away as I doubt any of you will understand what it is like to be rejected and mocked by society. This is one issue no one address in the political arena.

Looking at Chertoff does scare me, and if he were a good man who actually made the country safer, I don't think that would be the case. Just as the silliness and foolishness of our president makes us think of a chimpanzee, the coldness and harshness of Chertoff makes some of us think of vampires, etc.

I don't doubt that it is difficult raising a child with a deformity. I have a friend who has Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome and her physical deformity could not be cured with surgery unless she were willing to undergo amputation of both her legs. I saw how people in public places reacted to her by staring or asking stupid questions. Yet she married and became a doctor; she handles herself with
confidence both personally and professionally. I know what she goes through from day to day- people always asking "what happened to you" and yet she has learned to barely give it a thought.

This is just a political comment upon a Bush appointee I can't stand. Looking at him makes me feel scared, not safer. That's all.

No one is making fun of a disfigured person! Merely a person who is so ugly on the inside that it protrudes to the outside.

You assume much. Many of us here know what it's like to be "rejected and mocked by society" and you have no idea what our lives have been like.

For the sake of your child, please grow tougher skin and perhaps a set of dangle bits. If this thread got you so worked up, I shudder to think the what the effect of anything real would do to you.

I had the pleasure of being best friends with a lady who had a daughter with multiple birth defects... we took baby Jenny everywhere and treated her just like the rest of the kids. Sure, we got stares, snickers, but it didn't hurt us in the least. If anything, we pitied the shallow freaks.
