Many Americans Harbor Strong Bias against U.S. Muslims

A new Gallup poll finds that many Americans -- what it calls "substantial minorities" -- harbor "negative feelings or prejudices against people of the Muslim faith" in this country. Nearly one in four Americans, 22%, say they would not like to have a Muslim as a neighbor.

Almost four in ten, 39%, advocate that Muslims here should carry special I.D.

Am I the only one who finds this scary? Bigotry is coming out of the closet again, and people are actually advocating things like this. What's next? Making them wear badges on their clothing or sending them to camps? And once they've "taken care of" the Muslims, who's next?

The poll is, of course, to be taken with a grain of salt, as it almost certainly underrepresents the true amount of bigotry. (I.e., the poll numbers only reflect those Americans who were stupid enough to SAY that they're bigots.)

After all, only 40% of Americans support the war and 35% of Americans support the Bush Administration. It'll never happen. The other 61% of us will rise up in the streets and protest. Those protests will be broadcast by networks who will say "thousands of people protested" and everyone will be so impressed that Fox News will be forced to tell the truth and then everyone will turn into flying monkeys.
