why are they going to do trunk searches? Granted, a car bomb could do damage and hurt many, but why weren't they doing them yesterday?

If these items are so dangerous on a plane, wouldn't it stand to reason that they are bad in the general population too? I mean, if you can mix a bomb with them on an airplane, couldn't you do the very same thing standing in a Starbucks or a CVS drugstore?
