Why do I think this? Because the metropolitan police and the security services in Britain have not become politicised in the way they have in the States. The government does not control them operationally, even informally: Blair does not tell the Met what to do.

because they've held press conferences, at Scotland Yard, and I don't think the Met wouldn't take very kindly to people impersonating policemen in broad daylight outside their headquarters. The same goes for the other 2 police forces who made arrests in their areas.

Whether the intelligence on the suspects is good is another matter. We don't know if they'd made anything, were just talking but had seemed too serious for them to be allowed to continue, or if the intelligence came from informers who could be mistaken, mentally ill (which appears to have been the case at Forest Gate), or plants from the CIA/MI5/whoever. If the latter, it will have been an operation of many weeks, and their chances of being able to control the exact night the police decided to make the arrests is small.

What's really laughable is the thought that it would be done to distract from the analysis of a Democratic senate primary. It's the second funniest thing I've seen on DU today (the funniest in the "Dad's Army" terror alert chart that can be found in the DU UK forum, but it will only mean something to fans of 1970's British TV).
