Had an interesting conversation last night
With some friends that I have not seen for quite some time.
We were at a wedding.
The broad conversation eventually worked its way to the middle eastern crisis, and our governments tacit approval of Israel.
I mentioned that Harper is just a Bush yes man and have absolutely no confidence in him whatsoever. I then stated, "Don't get me started about George." My husband, who, has had to endure countless rants of mine quickly agreed. "Yeah, don't get her started!" And we chuckled a little.
Our friend surprized me with his own rant of George, and the state of American politics as it affects us and the world around us.
He thinks George is evil personified....and this is coming from a German immigrant, who came to Canada after WW2, after having lost his father to the war when he was 10 years old.
He compared Bush to Hitler, which on the face, I thought was over the top....and when I stated such, he said--look with exception to the attempt to destroy the entire jewish population--everything else fits completely. Wars of conquest, torture, Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib.
And what upset him the most - the very most is that by all appearances, there are no consequences for George of his own actions. Iraq is rubbleand fighting a civil war, Afghanistan is boiling towards a total meltdown, and now Lebanon and whoring for Iran and Syria. He saw the disfunctional German people powerless to stop Hitler--suffered losing his father over it, was the only son whose Mother told him he is now man of the house, and at the tender age of ten, had to provide for his family the best way he could. He told us of having to go out at night to steal potatoes so there would be something on the table to eat. And he sees America transfixed with the same impotence to stop a monster.
He asked me how America could possibly end it. I suggested impeachment...but he does not see it happening....and sadly....neither do I.
We talked of many things within American politics....the minimum wage vote being the most recent. You'd be surprized how politically savy we are up here to American politics.

We came to the conclusion that unless the American people themselves do not stop this madness within the democratic process....then democracy as a concept or idea is fatally flawed. If America cannot stop its own leader from war crimes, or prosecute him for such....then America as a model is broken and the world needs to look long and hard to find a better realignment for the sake of the human race.

Quite the wedding conversation.....

1. Yes, many valid points

In the Hitler analogy, substitute Islamic for Jewish minority, these people are citizens of rich
states with much assets including oil but traditionally have no real army. What we have now is
brutality with good PR.

2. Paradise of irresponsibility
Edited on Sun Aug-06-06 10:53 AM by teryang
Please relieve me of the burden of thought, decisions, and democracy.

"Nazism contained an incomparable and unsurpassable combination of all those psychological elements the masses needed...(Hitler) could not immediately give bread to the starving and wages to the unemployed but he absolved the weary, the desperate and the downtrodden from the heaviest burdens of their souls. He allowed them...to gather hope and feel superior. He released them from the loads of reason, responsibility, and morality. He led them back to the regressive paradise of irresponsibility and implicit faith. He let them relax into a precivilized, presocial, infantile stage. He allowed them to hate and believe, to strike and obey, to march and feel as the masters of the world."

Quoted in The Psychopathic God, Adolf Hitler, Robert G.L. Waite, 1978, p. 402.

4. Which is what makes him
Even more dangerous - imho. He lacks the intellectual capacity to be anything BUT a puppet, surrounded by neocons ever twisting his limited intelligence and mindset. He is perfect for that and that is why they love him so.

I don't know about Hitler. I think history shows him as an effective charasmatic leader--as despotic, crazy and evil as he was. You know he almost succeeded in his quest. He came so close. And what stopped him wasn't the world's outcry over the holocaust. For that isn't what mobilized the world against him. We should not forget that. He wanted a Germany that was void of jews....and he took over nations and persecuted the jews there as well. It was racism, bald, angry and ugly. There are no excuses.

I have nothing but contempt for what Bush has wrought the world. And while I hope for better days ahead--for a calling to account by the american people for their leaders abysmal record of warmongering and instability. But sadly--I doubt it will happen. And that is the reality of a democracy hijacked from within by elements that worship money and power above all else--even the basic principles of humanity.
Germany was incapable of prosecuting their own leadership.......does America hold any special power, tricks or magic? I had thought at one time that it would of been impossible given that the American political reality, enshrined within her constitution clearly had a system of checks and balances to stop such a thing from occuring. And yet....here we are. Occupying Iraq and invading under a false pretense of WMD....disregarding and dispelling the geneva conventions, setting up prison camps, torture, kidnappings, and whoring to remake the middle east under its complete power, with Israel as its resident regional governer.

One small step leads to another. Israel wants a contigious nation without any palestinians, without palestine at all. We should accept the writing on the wall - because it is there for all to see. They have already herded them into virtual prison camps completely controlled by Israel. I ask you this seriously. If it weren't for Iran and Syria.....what would stop them from just shipping the entire population of palestinians out totally???
And if they wouldn't go......and if no one was willing to take them.....how many more small steps would it conceivably be before the massacres began on a wholesale manner. How far would they have to be pushed to enact a final solution? It frightens me. Because while Israel has been harrassed and does have a right to defend itself--there is also a rabid element of racism that is bald, angry and ugly.

The children happily signing missiles got me to ponder all these things. As did a previous poster here stating that the palestinians did not deserve to have a viable nation because they attacked Israel and it was their own fault they were in small unsustainable enclaves.
