1. Register to vote. Select "Democrat" as your party.
...that's about it.

6. In Tennessee, we don't register by party. You choose each time
you vote in a Primary. You tell them which primary you want to vote in when you show up.

For the Democratic Party to find you, you need to vote in Democratic Primaries. We review the voter Database lists to find them.

Also, you can contact your local or state party. In Tennessee, the state party website is www.tndp.org. It has contact information and website links for many of the county parties. Ours is www.loudondems.org.

2. Contact your county party or state party and pay the membership dues.

Here it's a minimum of 25 bucks. 10 for students and folks with limited incomes.

10. Oh... I forgot that in other states you have to "register"...
...with a party in order to vote.

You're free to vote however you want here. So "registering" means joining a party as a member.

12. You didn't read my post. Or the OP, apparently.
The OP asked about "registering as a Dem" - not registering to vote.

15. Look at SharonAnn's post at #6. That's how it works here in...
...America's Dairyland. You can vote for any party you want in an election. You don't register as party member, you just vote for whomever you want. The one restriction is that you can't split your ticket in a primary.

So I assumed, being a registered Cheesehead, that the OP was asking how to join the Dem Party. That's what "officially registering as a Dem" means here in Wisconsin (and in Tennessee and Indiana, apparently).

Yes, my bad - but not in the way you thought.

B-)

5. By picking a party affiliation when you register to vote
Not all states require that, but I believe most states require you to pick a party or to select "unenrolled" which means you have not picked a party and are therefore considered to be an independant. At least that is how it is done in Massachusetts currently.

7. register to vote, there are voter registrations forms, MVA
you can call your Board of Elections, they send you a form, now the window for registration
closes so many days before the primary in your state but you can still register in time for
November after your primary. You will be asked to select a party Republican, Democrat, or Independent. Now in must states you can only vote in the primary for the candidate that represents your party so that Indpendents can't vote for Republicans or Democrats in the primary but can vote in the general election. You don't have to pay dues to a party to register to vote, you contribute when you want to.
