Susan McDougal on C-Span
Susan McDougal was one of three features on American Perspectives on Saturday. She gave a talk to an alternative press group about the background of the Whitewater investigation and her personal experience during the investiation and in prison. I thought I knew the story but was shocked to learn of the blatant attempts at extortion to get people to testify falsely.

Her personal story is amazing and I encourage everyone to tune in if they replay it on Sunday - or go to www.C-Span.org for the video or find the schedule (darned if I can figure out their web site).

Her's is a hero's story and if anyone needs to show their children that there truly are heroes among us - have them watch it too. We don't have too many examples of integrity for them to see and she is the real thing. Bless her heart.

1. She was fantastic
She was harassed big time and her treatment should be the shame of the GOP witchhunt. She was the only non murderer on murderer's row. She told the story of Christmas Eve when a nun played songs. She had cruelly been moved from another prison just days before Xmas eve. The nun kept her going.

She talked of how we so dismally treat those in prison when Christ said to reach out to them as the needy. One classy lady.

She also said the Clintons were 100% innocent in any wrongdoings.

3. What about "never in a million years"
she decked the whole bush cabal with the good works of others. Brilliant and honest.

So glad to know someone else saw it.

18. Thanks for the "heads up"
I'll make sure to watch it.

She is a hero for standing up to GOP corruption of power. I couldn't have done it. The passing of time has not faded the horror of the Scaife-Starr witch hunts. I don't know how the Clintons and their friends survived it, let alone managed to govern the country so well.

Driving out of DC a few months ago, I pulled over to check my map (I just HAVE to get one of those GPS thingys for my car) and found I was in Fort Marcy Park - where Vince Foster committed suicide. The memory of the GOP and media attacks on him and the Clintons for absolutely no reason saddened me terribly as did the loss of such a brilliant man. I said a prayer for him that he find peace and expressed my sorrow for what he and his family had to go through. It was a high price to pay for serving your country.

2. She's the real deal
We were lucky enough to meet Susan McDougal during her book tour a couple of years ago. The picture of Susan and the two of us is one of my most treasured possessions.

Susan said at the end of her comments that the night she went to prison, the sheriff told her that nobody cared about her, that everyone had forgotten her. Two days later, 50,000 letters and cards for her showed up. She thanked everyone in the room for being there through her tears.

4. Yes she is and
how lucky to have the picture.

Her's is a story for out times too - it is so inspiring and she tells her story as a way of offering hope for everyone. She said she has seen goodness that will emerge and prevail putting this bush nightmare behind us.
I want all my friends to see this - especially those who are discouraged.

7. I wonder why she just didn't demand a lie detector test.
That would have put a hell of a lot of pressure on those dicks when she passed it.

8. One point she made
was that she really was scared and did not have the confidence to stand up to them, having seen how they worked McDougal. She was not "demanding" anything because she felt she was up against some very skilled manipulators (Hale and Starr team).
She thought being silent was the best defense to assure she would not end up being worked over like her ex-husband and being used.

21. I would have just told the truth
and if they indicted me for perjury, take it to trial and let the jury decide.

9. Glad to see you posted about this, so I won't have to. ^_^
I came into it late, and wish I had seen the whole thing.

An amazing story, and she presented it well. So well, in fact, that I'm a bit concerned for her safety. :scared:

This story deserves to be a book, and I hope she writes it, or tells it to a good author!!

I hope that enough people will email about it that it will be rebroadcast!

Thanks for posting this!

10. I found the video, I think
>damned if I can figure out their website..

I know what you mean!

However, I searched by her name, and I think it came up with the right tape, so maybe some can see a replay of it.

I will keep hoping they rebroadcast it, though!

19. This was Fabulous; She was Extremely Impressive
She is always so impressive to listen to; if you have never heard her, you should listen to this one, or wait for any other speeches carried by C-SPAN, since the rest of the media has always censored her. She is very intelligent, describes things very well and with a lot of atmosphere, so the whole story is interesting and clear, and has a very attractive personality--honest and modest. If you listen to her explain the whole development of the events, not only are you angry at how these two separate situations were falsely put together by Republicans, just so they could persecute the Clintons with it, but it shows you yet again just what a totally corrupt manipulator this Kenneth Starr prick was. I always wondered why Starr was not imprisoned for leaking Grand Jury testimony to the media, and the media for reporting it, (supposed to be a Federal offense), and why a "criminal" probe that morphed from Whitewater to Paula Jones to Monica Lewinsky, etc., etc., was even pretended to be serious. I still wonder why Starr and etc. were not made to pay back the completely wasted tax money on all this shit, that ended with the official verdict of no guilt.

Susan McDougal explained--so clearly that you could feel it--the threat of this group, why they were so intimidating, how organized they were, how they got others--notably Jim McDougal--to crumble and cave, and how they manipulated a totally phony case by getting all the accused/witnesses to lie the same way and by bribing the corruptible ones. If she had been a male, the media would have been hailing her by now as a brave martyr and the harbinger of the new age to come, only now starting. As it is, she suffered this persecution almost completely ignored, except by those who picked up on things early. Notice that, whatever your opinion of Clinton, overwhelming majorities on every poll, did not support impeachment and were disgusted at Republican destruction-tactics.

The way she tells a story, step by step, takes you along over the developments of the time as they happened, and helps you to remember. It also packs a huge impact as later, in prison after she was defeated by this organized Republican campaign she would not cooperate with, she is exposed to a world she never knew about, and meets oppressed women who have never had a part of this society, abused by a system that does not even care if they are raped in prison, women who never had any kind of path in life, or plans. For the first time, she realizes a whole world of activity going on--totally shut off from the outside world--in prison. This is where the story lofts to another level completely. She discovers, beyond all the fake acts and memorized slogans, the true behavior of real Christians, serving the poor and oppressed among these women, and equally ignored by the corporate media, the Republican smear machine, and all the others she has ever known on the outside. This higher level, as she develops sympathy and even a common bond in prison, comes out of nowhere and is thrilling to listen to. You can almost see it happening.

Her step by step path as a real Christian, and what it took to get there, is beautifully told, and you end up with a real, real-world sense of the difference between good and evil. The current type of throat-slitting Republicans are evil, and a huge threat; Susan McDougal is moral, honest, and was never guilty of anything. Scary--and only now do we seem to be moving away from this demonic plague.
