Electric bills triple in S. Calif.
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=4d6cab5769a68634

The heat wave blamed for 139 deaths in California also tripled many residents' electric bills in July, Southern California Edison says.

Customers used 31 percent more electricity during the July heat wave than they did in June, with many doubling their usage, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

The ultra-high usage tripled many customers July bills because of previously planned rate increases and the utility's sliding rate structure, said Senior Vice President Lynda Ziegler.

A 15 percent Edison rate increased only applied to bigger-use customers.

Therefore, households accustomed to paying a lower rate because they don't use much electricity found a threefold jump in July because they were charged as if they were major electricity guzzlers.

1. You think?
Got my Edison bill today. I live in Thousand Oaks. $108 big ones for my 975 Square foot apartment. Knocked me on my ass. Last months bill was $58.00 The one before that was $21.00. The biggest one I've ever gotten in the 33 years that I've been a DWP and Edison customer.

I am grateful though, to have A/C. I feel so bad for people who don't.

3. Just curious, what temp is your home at?
Summer in Kansas usually averages 95, the lowest our AC would go was 80. I hated it, bake in the summer, freeze in the winter.

7. Houston suburbs -- cool at 80-82-, heat at 72 (I like it warm)
the pool out back helps...tho the water temp is 87 right now.

Wear less clothes and USE CEILING FANS -- A MUST!

Hubs likes it cooler so we're always batting the thermostat around. 2600 sf house, 2 furnaces & a/c units -- one for each floor. Highest winter gas bill : 300-ish. Highest Summer a/c : 554 (last year, Reliant Energy) SO I switched to TXU & so far highest is 450 (for last month, which was HOT, HUMID & the a/c was on HIGH the 10 days the kids & I were were traveling & hubs was home alone.)

5. Ah, good old SoCal Edison. The only satisfaction I ever got
was when I'd write 'shove it' in the memo section of my check. Didn't make the bill smaller, but it made me happier when I paid it.

10. I was miserable for two weeks
I had to turn a fan directly on me, and still could hardly sleep.

When I did get to sleep, either a work-related emergency or a cat would wake me up.
