Heat makes Pat Robertson a global warming "convert"
Conservative Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson said on Thursday the wave of scorching temperatures across the United States has converted him into a believer in global warming.

"We really need to address the burning of fossil fuels," Robertson said on his "700 Club" broadcast. "It is getting hotter, and the icecaps are melting and there is a buildup of carbon dioxide in the air."

This week the heat index, the perceived temperature based on both air temperatures and humidity, reached 115 Fahrenheit in some regions of the U.S. East Coast. The 76-year-old Robertson told viewers that was "the most convincing evidence I've seen on global warming in a long time."

Last year, Robertson said natural disasters affecting the globe, including hurricanes Katrina and Rita that wrecked the U.S. Gulf Coast, might be signs that the biblical apocalypse was nearing.

good, I guess, that maybe the nation can unite on this.

Of course, the Repubs will claim in 2008 that they've been trying to get Dems to acknowledge the problem all along, just as did over terrorism on 9-12.

...rather than all the research and science??? So, if it were only 80 degrees this week, he'd still be believing global warming didn't exist?

Well, whatever it takes, I guess, but this is just the other side of the coin of when stupid freepers were making fun of Al Gore a winter or two ago when he gave a speech on global warming on "the coldest day of the year."

16. This has to be a joke

I know MANY MANY religious Christians who are very disturbed about the environment, but since they hate Evolution, don't want God taken off the dollar, and weep for zygotes they won't vote against a party that will ruin the environment.

This statement by Robertson indicates senility has started to take hold of him. It may be time to take him out back and give him a humane termination.

29. If true, this is encouraging
Note that I said IF. That's a big IF.

But if it's true, this is VERY encouraging. We've been screaming for years now about global warming, trying to get people to listen. Now, when someone as influential as Pat Robertson (much as I loathe him, he IS influential in certain circles; I just don't travel in those circles). If PR is seeing the light about the crisis at hand, maybe there's hope we can reach more people with the message. That would be a good thing.

And if Pat makes a buck investing in alternative fuels, well, so be it. Isn't that what we WANT people to do -- invest in alternative fuels and stop burning dead dinosaurs?

We need consensus to make the changes needed to avert this disaster, if it's still possible. Now if we can just get business types to understand that:
A)There are plenty of carbon nuetral ways to make money
-and-
B)Climate change is bad for business, we can finally start addressing this issue. I'm not saying Jesus isn't coming back, I'm just saying we should run our country as if that won't be happening anytime soon.

Then it was pointed out to him that a much younger person with the world record in leg press could do only 1/3 the poundage, so he altered his televised statements a bit, but he still makes the claim on his website. :eyes:

ClayNation: Pat Robertson's magical protein shake
May 22, 2006
By Clay Travis
SPiN Columnist

(snip)

"1. I am going to drink this protein shake of his and try to leg press a Mazda Miata with three clowns sitting inside.

2. There is no way on earth Robertson leg presses 2,000 pounds. That would mean a 76-year-old man broke the all-time Florida State University leg press record by 665 pounds over Dan Kendra. 665 pounds. Further, when he set the record, they had to modify the leg press machine to fit 1,335 pounds of weight. Plus, Kendra's capillaries in his eyes burst. Burst. Where in the world did Robertson even find a machine that could hold 2,000 pounds at one time? And how does he still have vision?

3. It's rare the ClayNation Guarantee makes an appearance, but here, it is justified. There is no way Robertson leg presses 2,000 pounds. Period. If he can, I will box a round against Andrew Golota without wearing a jockstrap. After about 20 minutes on Robertson's Web site, I managed to find a way to send an e-mail without having to give my credit card information. Here was the text:

"I would like to interview Pat Robertson about his leg-press workout and protein shake. If possible, I would like to accompany Pat on his workout where I could help him stack on the 44 different 45-pound plates he would need to attach to leg press 2,000 pounds. By my calculations, his leg press of 2,000 pounds requires 22 forty-fives and one ten-pounder on each side.""

(snip)

46. Pat Robertson should STFU on global warming.
Global warming is a technical issue. Pat Robertson is a technical ignoramus. The proof of that is that he considers the recent heat wave as evidence on the question. What Robertson says on global warming has no more relevance than does my opinion on Mandarin grammar. Were he an honest man, what he would tell his followers is to listen to people educated in science, on the topic of global warming. And on the topics of geology, cosmology, and evolution.

But he's not an honest man.

I think not. We need well-known people with established platforms to be the messengers. Even if the platform is a TV pulpit. The general public doesn't listen to scientists.

This ONE time, I'll defend Pat Robertson. Even if he's wrong (and he is) about just about everything else.

49. Depends on how much he has studied the issue. I haven't seen his movie....
If it is reasonably well done, from a factual and scientific point of view, as most reports claim, then Gore deserves his props.

My criticism has nothing to do with credentials or background, but only with whether someone has studied and thought on an issue enough to even make the first bit of sense when addressing it. If Roberts really said it was the current heat wave that was "making a convert out of me," that was incredibly stupid.

With someone like Robertson, I see small reason to cheer him on just because he stumbles on something agreeable. That's like dusting off that stuck clock, making it a fancy frame, and hanging it on your wall, because it was right twice yesterday. In my opinion.

However, his followers are idiot sheep. Maybe some good can be accomplished before October brings light frost... Or, well, January, I guess...
