What's causing the record heat?

Global warming 54% 7354 votes

Normal heat trend 46% 6288 votes
Total: 13642 votes

EDIT: Yes, people are stupid. This, of all things, should be non-partisan

3. That's actually not bad.
You can't take a freak weather occurance and blame it on global warming. It could be because of global warming, but there's no way to tell. Global warming involves long term changes.

6. Agreed. We should be careful to be accurate as possible...
now that it appears that the public opinion is swinging toward accepting the science on global warming.

9. Well stated.
The most reasonable predictions for human impacts on global warming suggest only modest impacts over the next 20 years.

If we run around trumpeting "Global Warming! Dear God, save us!", we'll look pretty stupid if we get a five-year cooling trend.

7. Ignorance about global warming is pervasive.
The anthropogenic impacts on global warming really won't show up for at least another decade. The correct answer is "Normal warming trend"

11. Now, I'll take issue with that statement - we're seeing effects now:
it's just that no individual event can be traced to global warming - yet.

12. Although I disagree, proving either side would be difficult.
I am comfortable in saying, however, that if we don't change our ways very soon, we will have a severe price to pay.

8. Completely stupid question, btw...
...revealing more about CNN's lack of understanding of both weather and climate, not to mention all related issues, than anything else.

Neither "global warming" nor "normal heat trend" excludes the other as a causative factor, and in any case "normal heat trend" is a red herring--yeah, summer is warmer than other times of the year. Duh.

Morans... :grr:

15. Insufficient data.
it could be due to global warming, or it could be a normal spike in temperatures. I remember, I think it was August 1980?, we had 13 consecutive days of 100+ temps in central Missouri. Any single heat wave is not an indicator.

Now, the fact that the ten hottest years in US history have all been in the past 15 years -- that is global warming.

I believe in global warming 100%. I also believe it is ignorant to blame every new thing that occurs on it.

Heat waves happen, global warming or not. I fear we risk compromising the true validity and importance of global warming by attaching anything and everything weather related that occurs to it.

24. The Key Is In The Exact Wording
Notice that the question asks if Global Warming is causing the record heat we are seening all over the country. Well, the heat wave is natural enough, its word RECORD that makes it a true statement. Heat waves come and go but this years heat waves will sit on top of an elevated base level of heat. It is the base, the general temperature of the earth, that is gradually rising and so heat waves on top of that give records.
