| As I listen to yet another story about Mel's drunk night out, |
|
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 05:11 AM by cornermouse
his anti-semitic ravings that night, and the morning round of multiple demands for personal apologies being followed endless apologies from Mel, (not that he doesn't deserve it, but does it have to be on the news?) I think...
1. Why? 2. Who cares?
Has the media sunk so low that this is now a story with the same level of importance as what our government is up to?... the state of our economy?... a stock market that appears to be suspended in mid-air?... the entire Mideast going up in flames while Nero fiddles?...
Edit. And no, I am not a Mel Gibson fan. I don't particularly care for the type of films he stars in.

| 1. The amount of attention paid to this story is absurd |
|
It is strictly diversionary so that the American public will forget about the various wars/conflicts we are involved in, the deaths of American soldiers, the recent 9/11 revelations, the war crime torture tap dancing going on, the fiscal insanity going on every day with no accountability and on and on. This is another in the long line of runaway brides, Natalie Holloway, Michael Jackson, etc. It is an insult to all of us.
I wish they would create a new cable news channel: Mindless Blather Network - MBN All the News that Isn't News

| 3. Do you think this taints his 'Passion of the Christ'? |
|
RW christians have praised this thing like it was manna from heaven while many people have criticized it for it's anti-semitism.
His rantings put truth to those criticisms and I for one am glad to rub in this in the faces of people who refused to acknowledge it.

to criticize gibson as an anti-semitic loon however, i am not exactly sure what the taint-effect (tm) will be, if any on opinions about the passion.
as an aside: anybody remember Lynn Redgrave?
i like to compare gibson to roman polanski
gibson drank some beers, and made some anti-semitic comments while he was arrested for DUI
polanski drugged and forcibly raped a child. then, instead of taking responsibility, he fled to a non-extradition country and continues to be the darling of hollywood and continues to make (frankly) very very good movies
gibson HAS reached out to the jewish community, he's entered rehab, and he's apologized
i think he is kinda loony but i am not going to say he is some sort of terrible person, GIVEN his apologies etc.
but he is an anti-semitic loon
