I just got this in my e-mail.
Dear Liberty Coalition supporters,
Our sources indicate that the U.S. Senate will likely be taking up TONIGHT the Cybercrime Treaty (formally, the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime). This is an all-encompassing treaty that involves much more than stopping hackers and child pornographers. It is a broad-based electronic-evidence gathering treaty that internationalizes law enforcement and even more importantly, could have severe implications for free speech online. Do you want to be investigated for violating a French hate crime law because of something on your website? Political dissidents taking refuge in the United States could be under the gun, too.
Here is some background information:
http://libertycoalition.net/senate_must_reject_cybercrime_treaty Everyone needs to call their U.S. Senators, NOW, this evening/afternoon. Tell your Senators that you want them to oppose "unanimous consent" on this treaty; that this is something that merits serious debate before being ratified, not one pro forma hearing by the Foreign Relations Committee.
Forward this message to other mailing lists; post it to blogs and messageboards.
If enough Senators -- just a handful -- oppose unanimous consent tonight, this treaty will be taken off the calendar -- likely for the rest of the year. The Senate is too busy with other things to actually have an intelligent debate on the floor; which is what "unanimous consent" is designed to avoid.
The toll-free number for the U.S. Capitol switchboard is 1-800-839-5276. Call now and ask for your Senators' offices!
Thanks,
James Plummer
