Time for the Dems to Call GOP's Bluff! Call for a Vote on Abortion.
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 07:56 PM by David Zephyr
The GOP has been mealy-mouthing their support for banning abortion across the board for decades; and all these years Democrats have run from the argument altogether which is just what the Republican have wanted.

Well, the Republicans control the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House. So why in the hell don't they just deliver to the religious fanatics what they have promised them?

Why do the Republicans keep offering their nutbag constituency appetizers and not the full meal? We've had "partial birth abortion" legislation. We've had "parental consent" legislation? We've had "embryonic stem cell" legislation We now have the half-assed measure about "crossing the state line" for abortion. But where's the real meat and potatoes? Where is a real bill to ban abortion in all 50 states?

It's time for the Democrats to stop running scared of these phonies! It's time for the Democrats to demand that Bill Frist and Dennis Hastert provide a vote on both floors of Congress once and for all to ban abortion. I'm serious as hell. And when (no "if") they refuse to bring it to a vote, then call them out for the hypocritical creeps that they are.

Why do I say this?

Because the GOP really doesn't have any more play bullets in their phony little anti-abortion pistol that they've shown off for decades. There are no more half-measures to force Democrats to vote against anymore.

Proof? The very fact that GOP controlled state assembly houses have begun passing their own anti-abortion legalization proves that the real anti-abortion crowd is beginning to smell the mendacity and want a bonefide law outlawing abortion altogether.

There's only one small problem for the GOP. Every poll shows that the American public when pushed will not look favorably on an all-out ban on abortion rights. Look at what is going on South Dakota right now. The polls indicate that the public in that "ruby red" state don't want to outlaw abortion altogether. The Republicans have known this for years.

It's time for Democrats to take that old GOP record off the shelf and play it over and over. You know the tune, the one that Republicans sing over and over: The public deserves an "up or down vote".

Up or Down. Democrats should begin pressing these hypocrites once and for all to put up or shut up. And in so doing, expose these self-serving Republicans for the sleazy politicians they truly are.

Why do Republicans value an embryonic stem cell more than a fetus inside a mother? Why will they pontificate about saving a cell all day long, but won't lift a finger to "save" an fetus?

Up or down. Democrats have nothing to be afraid of. This is the fight the Republicans do not want.

also because of their hypocrisy promoting death in Iraq and Lebanon and anywhere else the decide. The contrast is high, right now, between their avowed values and their real values. I wish the Dems would do what you say.

4. What does anyone do when they discover the gun pointed at them is empty?
The time is right. It's more right then ever before, too.

When someones been chasing you down the road shooting bullets at you and suddenly you know that the chamber is spent and there are no more bullets, the chasee turns around and then beats the living hell out of the chaser.

They've shot their play bullets and now its time for the Democrats to stop running. Turn around and kick the living shit out of them!

Show the public who really NEVER intended to stop abortion, but just wanted an "issue" to beat up Democrats about.

No more half-measures. Up or Down!

6. They should do this and take whatever consequences that result.
They may have to work harder and closer with the people to keep from being voted out of office, but if they ARE voted out, they should fight even harder. There are some things that are worse than being voted out and I think we are living in the middle of them right now.

2. Wow - I have said the same many times over the last 14years the GOPs have

been trotting out that issue that not a damn one of them really cares about in their own lives.

How many abortions you think GOP politicians and their friends have paid for their wives, daughters, sisters, girlfriends, mistresses? They use the issue no differently than Ralph Reed used gambling, to enrich and empower them to further serve their fascist agenda.

5. Yep.
I know you have, blm.

The GOP doesn't really have anymore half-baked, anti-abortion legislation that they can whip the Democrats with anymore. It's time for the Democrats to get angry and tell these creeps to put up a real anti-abortion ban law before both Houses and then to vote on it. Democrats won't lose a night's sleep or a single vote from their constituents, but the Republicans will suddenly become victim to their own gamesmanship.

:hi:

7. You can't overrule the Constitution by passing a law.
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 08:38 PM by bowens43
Abortion is legal because of Roe Vs. Wade. To make it illegal or to make it legal for state legislatures to completely ban abortions, Roe Vs Wade has to be overturned. That can not be done through legislation.

8. The Republicans disagree with you and that's the point. The whole point.
The Republicans profess that the Supreme Court "invented" a law with Roe.

So whether or not the current Republican dominated Supreme Court will or will not wink at any new congressional legislation should not be their concern.

The GOP owes it to their supporters to introduce the legislation they have promised them. They have had the Democrats running on this for decades. It's time to turn the tables and call their bluff.
