45. More info on Aug 12th rally:
National Press Conference in Washington, DC
to Announce August 12 March

Please donate now!

This is a critical time and we need to raise $50,000 in the next two weeks. We are organizing buses from all over the country. The buses need to be paid for in advance. We are contracting for sound, stage, porta johns, and paying for posters, leaflets, placards.

There continues to be an amazing response to the appeal to support the Aug. 12 National Emergency March on Washington, but we still need your help to make it a success. The demonstration offers the best opportunity to show the opposition by the people of the United States to the Bush administration's partnership with the Israeli government in waging war against the people of Palestine and Lebanon.

Below is a copy of a media alert for a national press conference that will take place Thursday, July 27, at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. We will circulate copies of media coverage in the coming days.

We appeal to everyone who believes in justice to support the August 12th National March on Washington. Come to Washington, volunteer and participate. If you are unable to come, but would like to help subsidize the cost of bus transportation so that others can come, you can do so by making an urgently needed donation today. Click here to donate.

As we mentioned in yesterday's email communication, we have to pay all of our bills now, including buses, stage, sound, port a johns, flyers, posters, placards, and other associated expenses. If you haven't yet made a donation to help support the August 12th National March, please do so today by clicking here.

Press Conference
July 27 Washington DC Press Conference Update:
Ramsey Clark to Speak, Thurs., July 27, 1pm
Thursday, July 27th
1:00 pm
Murrow Room of the National Press Club
529 14th St. NW, 13th Floor

A coalition of Arab-American and U.S. peace groups will be holding a press conference on Thursday, July 27, to announce plans for a "massive National Emergency March on Washington DC on Saturday, August 12 to protest the U.S.-Israeli war against the people of Palestine and Lebanon."

"Buses and car caravans are being organized to bring people to Washington DC on August 12 from cities and towns throughout the United States," stated Brian Becker, National Coordinator of the ANSWER Coalition. The August 12 National March on Washington D.C. is initiated by ANSWER Coalition, National Council of Arab-Americans, and the Muslim American Society, Freedom Foundation.

The August 12 event will be the largest mobilization to date within the United States to oppose the latest U.S.-Israeli war drive against Lebanon and Gaza, according to the initiating organizations.

The press conference will discuss plans for August 12, the situation regarding rally and march permits, and outline a nationwide campaign to mobilize the U.S. antiwar movement, the Arab-American and Muslim community, and all people of conscience to oppose what the organizers call, "the criminal war that has already killed hundreds of civilians and displaced hundreds of thousands of people from their home.”

The press conference will also include direct eyewitness testimony from Dr. Mounzer Sleiman who has just returned from war-torn Lebanon. Dr. Sleiman is an independent analyst on national security affairs who appears frequently as a commentator on a number of Arab TV networks and radio outlets.

Speakers will include:
-Ramsey Clark, former U.S. Attorney General
-Dr. Mounzer Sleiman, National Council of Arab Americans, Independent Military and Political Analyst who just returned from Lebanon
-Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, Co-Founder Partnership for Civil Justice
-Mahdi Bray, Director, Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation
-Peta Lindsay, Howard University student, Youth and Student ANSWER Coalition
-Brian Becker, National Coordinator, ANSWER Coalition
-Rev. Graylan Hagler, Senior Pastor, Plymouth Congregational Church

54. It's great to hear there's a march planned August 12th in Washington.
Hope it's enough time to get up a great crowd, but it's also not so distant it will be easy to forget.

Looking forward to hearing more on this as the day approaches quickly.

NATIONAL CALL IN DAY

If your Representative has already co-sponsored this resolution, please call to thank him/her. For contact information, click here: http://www.congress.org /

BACKGROUND: Despite mounting civilian casualties on all sides, the United States continues to provide Israel with a green light to destroy Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. Last week, both the Senate and the House passed resolutions expressing uncritical support for Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice callously described the killing of Lebanese civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure as the "birth pangs of a new Middle East". The New York Times reported that the United States is rushing delivery of more satellite- and laser-guided bombs to Israel to sustain its attacks in violation of the US Arms Export Control and Foreign Assistance Acts.

We need to tell our elected representatives that the United States should be working for an immediate cease-fire, not providing Israel with the diplomatic and military support that it needs to wage its attacks.

Today, Tuesday, July 25, several national organizations-including the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Jewish Voice for Peace, the Council for the National Interest, Partners for Peace, Progressive Democrats of America, United for Peace and Justice, Peace Action, and the American Friends Service Committee-are organizing a national call-in day to Congress to support H.Con.Res.450, introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), which calls upon the United States to pursue an "immediate cessation of violence" and "multi-party negotiations with no preconditions".

48. From Oxfam:
Oxfam International Calls for Urgent Action on the Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in the Middle East
19 July 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oxfam International calls for urgent action from armed groups and the government of Israel to cease all military attacks. These attacks have resulted in the deaths and suffering of ordinary civilians on all sides of the conflict, and have led to a growing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon and Gaza and increasing insecurity in Israel.

All parties, together with the international community, must take immediate responsibility for upholding international humanitarian law and for intervening to ensure that civilians are protected from violence. Today, Oxfam partners and staff are witnessing and responding to the growing humanitarian crisis in the region. Oxfam estimates that over 40,000 people are displaced in Beirut alone. ICRC reports total displacements of 500,000 people in Lebanon. Over 200 people have been killed to date, most of whom are women and children. At the same time Israeli citizens are being subjected to rocket attacks which have killed 12 civilians and wounded many others.

While any state has the right to defend itself against armed attacks, Israel's destruction of civilian infrastructure including bridges, roads and the airport in Beirut is unacceptable. It has resulted in civilians being killed, has prevented them from fleeing conflict areas, and hinders humanitarian access. All parties to the conflict must recognize their obligations under the Geneva Conventions to distinguish between civilians and combatants and to refrain from attacks that harm the civilian population.

While attention has focused on the deteriorating situation in Lebanon and Israel, the world must not lose sight of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza which continues to intensify by the hour. More than 90 Palestinians have been killed and 240 wounded since the 28th of June. Most of Gaza is without a supply of mains electricity. Tens of thousands of families are struggling to survive without access to food, water and medical care due to Israeli military action and the continued closure of Gaza to the two-way traffic of goods and people.

Oxfam urges all parties to immediately cease hostilities in order to protect civilians and avoid an escalating crisis that could engulf the entire region.

The demonstrators, from a coalition of workers' rights organizations, called for an immediate halt to Israel's campaign against Hezbollah guerrillas, which began after the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers on the Israeli side of the border with Lebanon on July 12..

Demonstrators did not attempt to breach a line of about 30 police officers standing outside the entrance to the high rise office building where the Israeli offices are located.

Demonstration organizer Tang Shu of the Labor Rights Association said the demonstrators had gathered to protest Israel's actions in Lebanon, which he charged were indiscriminately targeting Lebanese civilians.

Israel and Taiwan have few direct links outside of trade relations that focus on agricultural exchanges.

53. Prestwick’s bombs for Lebanon role outrage
Prestwick’s bombs for Lebanon role outrage

By Steve Bargeton, political editor

MPs AND MSPs of all parties yesterday condemned reports that Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire has been used as a stopover for US aircraft flying bombs to Israel for use in besieged Lebanon.

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said a formal protest would be made to the US over the matter.

“We have already let the United States know that this is an issue that appears to be seriously at fault, and we will be making a formal protest if it appears that that is what has happened,” she said.

The Foreign Office later made clear that from its perspective the problem is the apparent breach of procedure—which has been denied by the US Defence Department—rather than the fact that the flights are taking place.

courage and integrity when he dared to call for the cease-fire resolution. He has been in a very small minority who dares to oppose the pro-Israel lobby and the supposed blindly biased pro-Israel public opinion. Most of the Dem leadership is baying for blood like the rest of Congress.

Some Lebanese-American congressmen tried to call for restraint in the killing of civilian, but they were beaten back too by the blindly biased Congress. Here is a WaPo article on this:

Congress Cautioned On Support of Israel: Some Lawmakers Seek a Middle Ground

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, July 26, 2006; Page A10

Even as the fighting continues and the civilian casualties mount in Lebanon, sentiment in Congress is overwhelmingly on Israel's side. Last week, the House passed a resolution, 410 to 8, that went even beyond the Bush administration in supporting for Israel in its battle with Hezbollah militants.

A bid by the four House lawmakers of Lebanese descent to add language urging restraint against civilian targets was rejected in negotiations. The resolution's only nod to those caught in the crossfire came in a recognition of "Israel's longstanding commitment to minimizing civilian loss" and an expression of condolences -- in the last sentence of a three-page document -- "to all innocent victims of recent violence in Israel, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories."

(snip)

"Israel obviously dominates the House," said Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Ill.). "If these were innocent people dying by the hundreds in Israel, there would be another resolution on the floor this week. But I knew it would be a losing proposition. The House tilts so far toward Israel and so far against anything else, I knew it would be like going into a tsunami."

(snip)

"I understand why the Israelis would attack the sources of the rocket launches in the south," Issa said. "But I'm not going to ignore these attacks on targets far to the north, in Christian neighborhoods where it appears to be punishment of the people of Lebanon."

31. This is just too much to bear...calls to congress, many of them.
Both parties are caught once again by surprise (and it's hard to blame them). The automatic support for Israel has evaporated to a large degree, but some politicians react by reflex...endorsing this action. Just call up your Representative and both Senators, send them all emails and voice your objections...plus all the other actions listed. They need to know. Will they act? Who knows but we'll never turn this around until people get the message that "wholesale" or "retail" violence is unacceptable on either side of the equation.

32. Sadly, the Pro-Life/ Culture of life doesn't care
If they were embryos or even hours old Blasophytes
They would commit Physicianicide to stop it,
But They care not to provide prenatal care
They care not to provide childrens healthcare
or Head Start
or a decent education.
And as soon as they're old enough,
They march them off to war.
And they certainly don't care about brown-skinned babies
in the region where their fervently awaited Armageddon is
scheduled to happen.

How can I pray to God
to stop the madness
when, by their belief
He hears only them?

Tear It Down!
Tear it all down!
Do it NOW!
