Democrats Buck Tradition With Move To Hold Nevada Caucus Second...

Dems may put caucus between Iowa, N.H.

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer Sat Jul 22, 9:14 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Democrats bucked decades of tradition Saturday by moving to wedge the state of Nevada between the long-standing one-two punch of Iowa and New Hampshire in the leadoff nominating contests for president in 2008.

In an effort to provide more diversity in early voting, the Democrats' rules and bylaws committee recommended that Nevada be allowed to hold a caucus the Saturday after Iowa's leadoff caucus — likely to be held Jan. 14. The rules panel also awarded South Carolina an early primary, which would be held a week after New Hampshire's Jan. 22 primary.

The moves were praised by Alexis Herman, a co-chair of the rules panel, who said it was appropriate to make such changes "soon after the renewal of the Voting Rights Act" which protects the rights of minority voters. Almost a quarter of Nevada's population is Hispanic and more than a quarter of South Carolina's population is black. Iowa and New Hampshire are predominantly white.

3. How about equal protection
One day nationwide Primary Election with the top two in a runoff if no candidate receives a plurality. Save the money and attacks for the General Election.

5. Equal protection for candidates with the most money and corporate backing
This would force candidates to spend huge amounts of money in the national media market and small states and less prominent candidates would get no say in the process.

7. Less prominent candidates can compete and be visible in smaller
media markets and with less money.

A candidate would probably end up trying to raise $50-$100 million just to compete in a national primary.

4. Terry McAuliff screwed things up by front loading the primaries so.....
that there is no time to reflect on one election-whoever wins first wins it all, because of simple momentum. Its a depressing and pathetic distortion of the primary system we had back in 1976 when the schedule actually helped us test our candidates and gave us time to reconsider our early choices.

Today, the decision is made and finalized in Iowa and New Hampshire.

How sad.
