Third of Lebanon casualties are children, says UN

Nearly one third of all casualties in the Lebanon-Israel conflict have been children, according to the United Nations’ emergency relief co-ordinator, Jan Egeland.

He said it appeared neither Hezbollah nor the Israelis seemed to care about civilian suffering.

Nearly a third of the dead or wounded were children and the wounded could not be helped because roads and bridges had been cut by Israeli air strikes.

“International humanitarian law is clear on the supreme obligation to protect civilians during hostilities”, the High Commissioner said. “This obligation is also expressed in international criminal law, which defines war crimes and crimes against humanity”.

8. That's about right, if the numbers are reflective

mostly of collateral damage. About a third of Lebanese are children. High birth rate. Probably higher among the Shi'a than other ethnic groups, if recent demographic trends have continued (which show a greater rate of growth among the Shi'a than others).

Since Hezbollah has told its folk not to bury their dead, lest they give away their true losses, I'm not sure that the number's complete.
