I just had one of those moments. I thank DU
I thank DU because I feel so much more informed. Also over the past years, I've read about "grocery store moments" and I've often been skeptical of some of what I have read. This is my moment.

I went to the store very early this morning to beat the 105 degree forcasted high for today here in Tulsa. As I was checking out at my favorite checkers lane, I overheard him visiting with an older woman, and then a smallish man who I soon realized was her husband. They were buying large amounts of meat and vegetables. I heard the checker say, " I know you must be worried". Then the conversation turned to tabouli recipes. So, I butted in and said, "Do you own a restaurant?" She said yes Cedars.

My mind says.. Cedars. Worried. They are Lebanese!

I paid for my groceries and my once weekly flower bouquet. I buy one per week because it is my gift I give myself. They make me happy.

I kept thinking to myself that I wished I had offered my best wishes to the couple. I feared bothering them.

As I went out to load my van, their car was parked in the front. The woman was sitting in the passenger seat, but her husband was still in the store. I went up to her car, motioned for her to roll down her window. I said, " Are you from Lebanon?" She said yes. I said that I offered my best wishes and that I would be thinking of her and her family. I gave her my flowers.
She got tears in her eyes and said, "My brother's funeral is today in Lebanon. He died of natural causes, but I can't go. She smiled and thanked me for the flowers.

I went on to my van. I saw in the corner of my eye the husband walking toward me. I stopped and he grabbed my hands and said, "We need more people like you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. She is having a hard time." Then he hugged me. A big long open hug out in the parking lot. I've never had such an experience with a hug. He was the same height as me, so it was a very comfortable feeling and I could just feel the warmth. I got tears and he got tears, and then we went on our separate ways.

So, here I am on DU telling my grocery store moment.

107. Seconded!
Thanks so much for sharing your story!!!

My family and I have shared many pleasant conversations with the proprietor of a local middle eastern restaurant who is Lebanese. He and his family have been in my thoughts these last few days. Now I feel a twinge of shame for not following through where you did.

7. Good on you!
There are many, many people that this war is just tearing up. Lately I think of an old friend of mine from many, many years ago. He is a Lebanese immigrant, and came over to the University of Missouri to get an education. He later moved to the east coast. I hope he is doing well, and that his family and friends are safe.

I get my morning cup of coffee at a shop owned by a Jordanian immigrant, and he is rather distraught since this war broke out. Not only is he afraid of it spreading to other countries in the area, but he too has friends in Lebanon and Syria, and worries for their future.

Good on you for brightening these peoples' day. You are an example of why many many people overseas hate our government, but love the American people.:toast:

42. Beautiful story! Thanks for posting it!
We all need to start by forgiving ourselves for what this Bush junta is doing in our name. Not forgetting our own faults (whether head in the sand, or uninformed, or self-centered, or whatever)--we do need to understand how we have failed--but FORGIVING ourselves, so we can make a FRESH START at restoring democracy here, and begin to think realistically and strategically about the main issue, from the Bushites' point of view: power. Where is our power as the theoretically sovereign people of this land? How has it been taken away? How to get it back?

The Bushites don't think of "random acts of kindness" that save the world, and that make the human race such an endearing species, despite all our faults. They seem to lack the "kindness" gene. (Whether they do or not--or what has become of it, in their lives--who knows? But that's how they seem.) So we, THE MAJORITY, must attend to both the "random acts of kindness" that save the world, AND to the power situation that has emboldened the unkind, the greedy and the murderous.

My personal read on the power situation--gained from information here at DU--is that there is now a very specific mechanism being used to override the will of the majority of Americans on war and corporate rule issues: namely, the coup that occurred between 2002 and 2004, whereby two Bushite corporations gained control over election results, using TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code, with virtually no audit/recount controls, in the new electronic voting systems. This electronic voting coup gives the fascists easy, invisible, unaccountable and massive control over election outcomes. So my focus has been to expose this coup and break its power. Others in the DU Election Forum and in the new election reform movement feel the same way: This is IT. This is the new control mechanism. It's no longer war profiteering corporate news monopoly brainwashing. That hasn't worked. 70% of the American people oppose Bush's war, and most Bush policy, despite 24/7 propaganda. It's no longer just the filthy campaign contribution and lobbying system. That's been pretty effective, but it cannot insulate politicians from the overwhelming disapproval of the people. So they've gone to direct control of the vote tabulation with secret code.

Strategically, they have us outmaneuvered. This extremely non-transparent and corrupt election system was very quickly entrenched (by means of a $4 billion electronic voting boondoggle appropriated by the Anthrax Congress, and engineered by the biggest crooks in Congress, Tom Delay and Bob Ney (abetted by Bilderberg 'Democrat' Christopher Dodd)). So we now have corrupt election officials and legislators all over the country, who are defending this NON-TRANSPARENT, corporate-controlled voting system, and/or who are trying to "save" the most important part of it--the trade secret code and corporate control--in the face of an uprising of the rank and file Democrats and the election reform movement.

Currently, I think the only thing we can do, re: November, is a massive Absentee Ballot vote--to protest the rigged machines, and create a peoples' "vote of no confidence" in this rigged election system. If nothing else, AB voting will throw a great big monkey wrench into the system. AB voting is not a "safe" way to vote--but it COULD BE a great PROTEST. A lot of people are doing it already, as a protest against the machines--it's up to 50% in Los Angeles. If it goes nationwide and gets up to 60% or 70%, we've really got something. A rebellion!

The only way we can get government policy that reflects the kindness of Americans as individuals, and as a people, is by re-empowering the majority. We have to do BOTH: kindness and strategy.

Hugs and flowers for the oppressed, including ourselves. Tough thinking about the Bushites and power.

Bumper sticker: "Bust the Machines--Vote Absentee!"

77. Thank you so much for doing that ..
and for telling the story.

It made me feel really good for at least a few minutes. I was proud of Beloved Daughter last night; we went to Denney's (many of the local working class have jobs there, and I like to support this one manager). We were sitting near a poor family with four kids. The little girl said, "I wish I could have the blue dolphin stuffed animal in the machine." She was crying.

Well, as it happens, my hubby is an engineer, and he is very good with angles and winning games involving working with angles. He always wins my daughter three or four stuffed animals at toy machines. He had just gotten ('won') that dolphin. I whispered in my kid's ear, and she gave the little girl the dolphin. I never saw a smile so bright. My kid got a big cheesecake dessert that night.

82. Cedars--A childhood favorite of mine
I grew up mere blocks from the Cedars Deli back in the day it was spitting distance from Billy James Hargis' Christian Crusade. Billy James is long gone and his empire taken over by OU. But the Cedars survives. Do they still sell those wonderful Po-boys?

Among my biggest treats as a child was on the rare Saturdays my workaholic Dad would take my Brother, Sister, and I there for the Po-boys. The melange of smells from that place is forever imprinted on my brain. Just the mention of the name immediately brings that memory forth.

Cheers to you Nancy for being so kind to some people when they needed it. The world is messed up and impossible to understand. After all the BS is stripped away, we're all lost souls trying hard to survive in a world we haven't made. When we reach out and provide help, comfort, or kindness to people for no other reason than they need it and we are able to do so, we loose a tremendously powerful energy that changes the world in profound ways far beyond our ability to perceive it.

Jesus said, "When you do for the least of my brothers and sister, you do for me." Whether or not you follow Jesus, these words--Matthew 25:35--are good ones.

LOL

good one - after trying to chastise anyone blaming the US's role in all the crap in the middle east. Sorry but the crap we have done does affect that part of the world now. It's not a direct reason, but it has its role. You gave yourself away with this line - "so those blaming the US for "this war" need to stop it."

If you cannot see the humanity involved in this situation - I feel sorry for you. Letting people know you care is NEVER wrong.

126. No... we're not bombing Lebanon...
this is a "war by proxy" and Israel is waging it. It isn't just Hezbollah/Hamas that is to blame for the violence - Israel is just as responsible. America is responsible because we only give Israel a ceremonial slap on the wrist while coming down heavy-handed (i.e. economic sanctions) against "terrorists" that aren't on our payroll - like Israel is. Don't get me wrong, I don't think of Israel as terrorists but they are killing innocent civilians and destroying infrastructure. Hezbollah and Hamas are terrorist organizations. But they have done things to help their people (the civilian populations in Lebanon, Syria, et al) like building schools and hospitals. When groups like these are given legitimacy by their respective populi (is that a word?) attacking them only gives the terrorist group that much more standing with their people. This is not a situation for cowboy diplomacy - "...tell Hizbollah to stop this sh*t!" Real diplomacy is needed - that and an actual desire to see peace in the Middle East established - something NeoCon-artists cannot stomach. Sorry for the long post... just couldn't let that one go. Carry on.

She felt their pain and offered her flowers to them as a sign of compassion... nothing more.

If you would refrain from offering comfort to your fellow man when they're in pain, simply because of their political ideology, I think you need to pull back and try to see the bigger picture, friend.

Peace... and welcome to DU.

99. On the night of the 11th of September 2001,
I felt compelled to visit the Arab grocery down the street from me to hang out with the owners and their sons when I bought cigarettes. They love my dog, and he was tied to the lamp post outside. They all came out and gave him treats and a bowl of water. I continued on my rounds, to the Christian Syrian gyro/pizza shop down the street, where I got a couple of slices and hung out with the guys that run it... Then I walked on down the street a couple of blocks with the dog to the Muslim Egyptian gyro/pizza shop, repeating my actions earlier, but as I was quite full, only got a to go order of hummus and a soda. After about an hour, the late night falaffel stand (Muslim Palestinian) had opened. He is a close friend of mine, and I spent most of the night just talking to him, eating his free kofta and drinking sodas as we played with the dog. His Nigerian workers did all the work while we visited.

I was there on purpose, of course, to let these businessmen know that they were my clients and my friends. We never talked politics once, but they knew why I was there. As a sign of support in a conservative college town (Tuscaloosa, Alabama) which has a rabid right wing Young Republican cadre and lots of drunken frat rats just looking for a victim...

Here I sat outside for hours, eating Palestinian goodies, and just talking -- with my friends, several of whom had the same idea I had and joined us. The Doberman stood guard, begging for a morsel of kofta...

The drunks emptied out the bars at 2am, and I was still there with Phil the WunderHund...and my Arabic speaking friends. The drunken youth came in their jeeps, Hummers and pickups and on foot, many got gyros and kofta, but all they said was "Thanks, I'll be careful" as my friend enjoined them to be careful driving home.

Noone but me knew that I had a very long, very sharp dagger in my shorts and that the Doberman would attack at will given my "secret word" command. Paranoid? Maybe, but if they were out looking for trouble, I was more than willing to give them some. That is what friends are for.

103. Bless you, dear...
for your wonderful, gentle heart. I think that there are probably many of us out here who are just looking for something to do, some way to reach out, and you found one.

Somehow, I can't help but believe that the average American is just like the average Palestinian, or the average Israeli or the average Iraqi - wherever. We are all out here just trying to get from day to day, doing our best and caring for our friends and families.

We are not fighting anyone and don't want to. We are not shooting anyone and don't want to. We have no desire to send anyone's child to war or to kill anyone's child. We are just here, watching the madness and wondering how on earth we can get our leaders to listen to reason.

Someday....

Thank you "OKNancy". That was a wonderful moment and I know how you feel. You reminded me of a time a few years ago while I was picking up coffee for my office and was waiting in line behind an older couple and they were have a real problem finding enough change to make their small purchase. Of course I paid for their food and only now remember that they were immigrants from the middle east.
It never mattered who they were back then because we didn’t have a press and party that hates and teaches hate as we do today.

my local Lebanese restaurant...they are lovely people and everyone there is so worried and upset.

This whole thing is a god damned shame.

At a parking lot in Tulsa and in a website forum on the Internet. And that's truly what it's all about. Thank you Nancy.

148. My Lebanese Co-Worker
My co-worker is 2nd generation Lebanese (Maronite Christian). His family is from the Bekaa valley, where they're shelling. He's going to a family wedding in Texas this weekend. We were talking about all of this today. His take on it is that it's too late for the Syrians and/or Iranians to stop Hezballah. They're acting on their own now, and they've poked the Israeli dragon with a sharp stick too much. He figures that the problems back in the "Old Country" will supercede any petty family dysfunction that happens to pop up.
