Murtha to receive public service award

U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha is expected to speak on national security issues Thursday when he receives the 2006 Edmund S. Muskie Distinguished Public Service Award.

The award is given by the Center for National Policy, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy organization in Washington.

The 74-year-old Johnstown Democrat, who held the rank of colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve until his retirement in 1990, is being honored for "his lifetime of patriotic service to our nation," according to the center. In recent months, he has drawn intense media attention for calling for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Earlier this year, Murtha received the John F. Kennedy 2006 Profile in Courage Award from the Kennedy Library Foundation.
