Feingold takes his war critiques on the road
On second trip to Iowa this year, talk turns to Iraq, '08 elections

Maquoketa, Iowa - On a two-day political trip to Iowa, Wisconsin Democrat Russ Feingold broadened his long-running critique of the Iraq war, saying that the chaos in Iraq has emboldened U.S. enemies to attack Israel, and that it may end up fueling far broader conflict both inside and outside the Middle East.

U.S. Sen Russ Feingold hears from supporters Saturday at the Dubuque County Democratic Headquarters in Iowa. The state's early presidential caucuses have made it a strategic place to focus early in a campaign.

"We have bought ourselves a world of woe," Feingold told a small group of Democrats at a downtown cafe, citing the escalating conflict along Israel's borders as further evidence of what he called the "tragic error" and "disaster" of invading Iraq.

"What we have done by becoming mired in Iraq, and by deciding to change the balance of power in that region, is enable Iran and Syria to be much more open in tormenting Israel, the United States and our allies," Feingold, a longtime supporter of Israel, said in an interview Sunday. "They don't have any restraints on them. They know that we're tied down. They see a window of opportunity being created by the fact that we are stuck in Iraq."

A potential dark-horse 2008 candidate for the Democratic nomination, Feingold made his second trip of the year Saturday and Sunday to Iowa, a political mecca that is home to the nation's earliest presidential caucuses.

2. I love Russ.
I was in Maquoketa. We asked questions, he answered. He asked questions and listened to what we had to say. We told him that the Dems needed to get a spine. There was a lot of things discussed and very little of it about Iraq. I think the headline is misleading.
Yes, it's unmistakable, he is testing the waters for a presidential run.

4. Cool. How did the room react to him?
Yeah, I suppose the headline is misleading. But it's the one that ran in the main Milwaukee newspaper here.

5. Very receptive.
I should say enthusiastic. It's not often you meet a Dem with a spine. He said that after reviewing the evidence and listening to the experts, he thought he had to bring up censure. We gave him a rousing cheer.
