Novak: Rove was a source in outing Plame

By PETE YOST, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Columnist Robert Novak said publicly for the first time Tuesday that White House political adviser Karl Rove was a source for his story outing the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame.

In a column, Novak also says his recollection of his conversation with Rove differs from what the Rove camp has said.

1. Doesn't look that way....
Dana Milbank said earlier tonight that the investigation is about over. No more indictments are expected. Our only hope at this point is something emerging from the Libby trial or a civil suit by the Wilsons.

2. Well ....hard to know what to make of the timing of Novak's column...
I guess we will have to wait and see if anything else comes from Fitzgerald, although it's looking pretty quiet there.

I've tried to follow the Plame/Fitzgerald story, with all of its ups and downs. It sure has been a roller coaster hasn't it? I had such high hopes for senior-level indictments. I truly thought Fitzgerald was our knight in shining armor.

I don't get this story. Novak reveals that Rove was one of his sources, and that Rove leaked the identity of Plame to him. Doesn't that implicate Rove? Novak told Fitzgerald this information, so why wasn't Rove indicted. Am I understanding correctly that Rove lied, but then later said he really didn't lie--he just didn't remember.

Ok then...if he didn't remember...then why didn't Fitz scrap the obstruction charges and charge him with outing an undercover CIA operative?

Novak also claims to have named other senior-level officials. So...where are those indictments?

I don't get it. At all. Is Fitz having a tough time PROVING the case...or does he have enough proof, but does not feel that the crimes are that serious?

I apologize for all of the questions. I tried to follow this, but was pretty burnt out on the Plame subject after the Rove indictment fizzled.

Thanks to anyone and everyone who has kept on top of this.

I'm boggled.

6. Did you read Novak's column?
He writes a lot without saying much, but the one message that does come through is that he won't name the primary source. Also implies that he is writing now because Fitz's investigation is over.

7. Oh yeah - one other thing
Novak wrote that Fitz knows who the primary source is. And also that Fitz knew before he even interviewed Novak for the first time.

4. Thanks Novakula for the "scoop," you're a tad too late, we've known that
for a long time. What's your next scoop? Titanic doesn't make it to New York? The Hindenberg erupts into flames? Galileo was right?

5. I read Novak's column
He said Rove wasn't his primary source and still would not name his primary source. I wonder if he ever will. From the tone of Novak's column and given that he is finally talking - it sounds like Fitz is winding down the investigation if he hasn't already ended it.

8. Then why didn't Fitz...
go after the person who Novak named as his senior-level source?

I don't get this.

10. I don't know
The sense I got from Novak's column was that he wasn't given an actual name. He wrote that he had to look up Wilson's wife's name in a Who's Who and that the person inadvertently mention the info to him.

I'm starting to get this weird feeling that we may need to wait a few decades for everything to come out just like the long wait to find out who "Deep Throat" was. Or maybe the info will come out during Libby's trail.

9. Novak's part in the Fitzgerald investigation is over but not Fitzgerald's
investigation. Novak is pathetically trying to paint himself as more important to the investigation than he was, but that should surprise no one, imo.

Fitzgerald will announce when his investigation is complete, until them things are moving along, not at a pace that some, including myself at time, would prefer but it is continuing.

Just check into his investigation of Ryan, the former governor of Illinois:

Former Gov. George Ryan indicted

Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan was charged today in a federal racketeering indictment with conspiracy and fraud while he was governor and secretary of state.

Ryan allegedly engaged in a pattern of corruption that included performing official government acts, awarding lucrative government contracts and leases and using the State of Illinois for his own benefit, members of his family, his campaign organization and certain associates, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's office.

snip

The investigation, dubbed Operation Safe Road, initially focused on bribes exchanged for licenses for unqualified truck drivers when Ryan was secretary of state. It expanded into a broader investigation of political corruption that snared several of his top aides and associates.

"It was not opened up as an investigation of George Ryan, it was opened up as an investigation of licenses for bribes at the secretary of state's office," Fitzgerald said.
