Don't forget he has a previous incident with KKKarl similar to this.
Novak probably didn't call up Rove and ask for the information. It was more likely Rove called Novak and said, 'Hey Bob, I have a job for you.'

claimed to have been derived from a public document listing her political contributions.

Valerie Plame, employer Brewster Jennings. Know the name, and want to find out her political leanings? There it is. DUers have done it for many a public figure; private figures are no different.

And Novak revealed that she was a CIA agent, uncovering, killing, imprisoning and probably torturing many important CIA assets in the process.

31. No.
As I've said elsewhere, if a person simply told Novak that "Wilson's wife wrote a recommendation for his trip", you get to Novak's story in 2 or 3 easy steps.

The only thing you need to do is confirm that Plame was CIA; you don't need to confirm 'covert' or 'undercover' status. And he got that.

Now, this may not be how it happened; it may have been a vast conspiracy that set out specifically to undermine Brewster Jennings. But it's consistent with everybody's story, and plausible; it requires no assumptions but a certain level of basic inquisitiveness in pursuit of undermining Wilson, which we knew existed anyway. Moreover, it's consistent not with how RW thought is portrayed on DU, but with how RW writers wrote and argued at the time, and is consistent with plausible motives.

48. No but if you know Valerie Plame Wilson really works for the CIA then
it pretty much means her employer of public record is a cover. For example, long ago I looked up the Wilson's campaign contributions and Valerie Wilson listed Brewster Jennings as her employer. That only becomes significant when you know/learn that she really works for the CIA.

As Joe Wilson said, she, Brewster Jennings, and related ops were all blown when her CIA employment was made public via Novak's column. Other intel agencies would be checking up on Plame/Wilson, her "employer," and related contacts/activities right after her CIA identity hit the media.

15. He's under no compulsion to tell the truth to the public about any of this
And, I don't expect he will.

As for Bill Harlow, Novak is revealing nothing new here. This is from a 07/27/05 WaPo article:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20...

Harlow, the former CIA spokesman, said in an interview yesterday that he testified last year before a grand jury about conversations he had with Novak at least three days before the column was published. He said he warned Novak, in the strongest terms he was permitted to use without revealing classified information, that Wilson's wife had not authorized the mission and that if he did write about it, her name should not be revealed.

Harlow said that after Novak's call, he checked Plame's status and confirmed that she was an undercover operative. He said he called Novak back to repeat that the story Novak had related to him was wrong and that Plame's name should not be used. But he did not tell Novak directly that she was undercover because that was classified.

In a column published Oct. 1, 2003, Novak wrote that the CIA official he spoke to "asked me not to use her name, saying she probably never again will be given a foreign assignment but that exposure of her name might cause 'difficulties' if she travels abroad. He never suggested to me that Wilson's wife or anybody else would be endangered. If he had, I would not have used her name."

Harlow was also involved in the larger internal administration battle over who would be held responsible for Bush using the disputed charge about the Iraq-Niger connection as part of the war argument. Based on the questions they have been asked, people involved in the case believe that Fitzgerald looked into this bureaucratic fight because the effort to discredit Wilson was part of the larger campaign to distance Bush from the Niger controversy.

19. Big scoop, Matt. Novak wrote about that in Aug 2005. LINK----->
Columnist Hints Book Was Source That Led to Use of C.I.A. Officer's Name

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 - One of the most puzzling aspects of the C.I.A. leak case has had to do with the name of the exposed officer. Why did the syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak identify her as Valerie Plame in exposing her link to the C.I.A. in July 2003 when she had been known for years both at the agency and in her personal life by her married name, Valerie Wilson?

Mr. Novak offered a possible explanation for the disconnect on Monday, suggesting in his column that he could have obtained Ms. Wilson's maiden name from the directory Who's Who in America, which used that name in identifying her as the wife of Joseph C. Wilson IV, a former ambassador.

My Leak Case Testimony
Posted Jul 11, 2006

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has informed my attorneys that, after two and one-half years, his investigation of the CIA leak case concerning matters directly relating to me has been concluded. That frees me to reveal my role in the federal inquiry that, at the request of Fitzgerald, I have kept secret.

I have cooperated in the investigation while trying to protect journalistic privileges under the First Amendment and shield sources who have not revealed themselves. I have been subpoenaed by and testified to a federal grand jury. Published reports that I took the Fifth Amendment, made a plea bargain with the prosecutors or was a prosecutorial target were all untrue.

For nearly the entire time of his investigation, Fitzgerald knew -- independent of me -- the identity of the sources I used in my column of July 14, 2003. A federal investigation was triggered when I reported that former Ambassador Joseph Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame Wilson, was employed by the CIA and helped initiate his 2002 mission to Niger. That Fitzgerald did not indict any of these sources may indicate his conclusion that none of them violated the Intelligence Identities Protection Act.

27. UPDATE
In an op-ed on Human Events Online, Novak writes that Fitzgerald has cleared him and that frees me to reveal my role in the federal inquiry. But Novak fails to reveal all, as he earlier pledged, in at least two respects.

1. Novak refuses to identify his primary administration source who revealed to him that Valerie Plame worked at the CIA as an undercover agent. He confirms Karl Rove was his second senior administration source, and that CIA official Bill Harlow served as a confirming source. But Novak writes his primary sources name has not yet been revealed and has not come forward to identify himself.

2. Novak also did not explain why he earlier said he was given Plames identity by the White House as part of an effort to intentionally out her. He said: I didnt dig it out , it was given to me. They thought it was significant, they gave me the name and I used it. In his latest op-ed, Novak fails to address this issue, and states simply that Plames role in instituting her husbands mission was revealed to me in the middle of a long interview with an official who I have previously said was not a political gunslinger.

28. more info, still lots of holes
The Human Events article is the complete story from Novak himself, the Drudge posting is his usual mash-up and misses the main points.

What is interesting is that Novak is still protecting his source, but according to him Fitz knows who Source #1 is. One thing I would like very much is for Fitz to issue a report (which would include things like the identity of Source #1, which he is under no obligation to protect). But because the Special Prosecutor law was ended Fitz won't be able to do that. He has to follow the standard Federal Prosecutor rules which are "let the arrests do the talking" basically.

According to Novak, Rove only confirmed what source #1 had told him. It's also amazing that the CIA confirmed this. Apparently they didn't think enough of Val's secret identity to protect it. (IE: Yes, she is, and please don't publish that, she is covert.) Again, I'd like to see why the information officer wasn't more protective. Very odd.

This is another little piece of the puzzle, but the whole picture is still cloudy.

I hope you have noticed how actual links to actual facts is often, very often provided by users of DU, it is expected when one cites something as fact yet cannot, will not provide proof. That seems to be quite the opposite in freeperland, facts are an anathema to those who wish to keep their delusions, quite sad really, once one stops laughing that is.

like the putrid birdie he is the second his fat ass was in trouble and now he is trying to salvage same ass and those of his equally putrid buds.

He is full of self importance, he was merely the water-carrier for the bush cabal so peripheral to the investigation, no surprise he has been notified he is no longer of interest to Fitzgerald. He sang his puny heart out from the beginning so he is no longer of use.

50. Agree, Novak sang so quickly and he only had info to provide that
verified what Fitz already knew, that being the name and cover operation of a COVERT CIA agent was leaked to Novak in contravention of the law. Novak was not the leaker, he was merely the leakee, as usual he got pissed on by Rove and is still kissing his butt and lying for him. Pretty pathetic for sure.

Fitz's investigation continues, Novak's part in it was peripheral and even that part is now over.

55. Umm, it was the CIA itself that requested the investigation of the
leak of the identity of a COVERT agent. That request is what started the whole ball rolling.

65. Gosh, I hope your visit has been fruitful, dare I say "educational"!
DU deals in facts, facts backed up by CREDIBLE links unlike freeper delusion headquarters, aka free republic. Oh, and to help your further edification, Fitzgerald did, indeed, refer to Valerie Plame's identity as classified and her position as covert:

Prior to July 14, 2003, Valerie Wilsons employment status was classified. Prior to that date, her affiliation with the CIA was not common knowledge outside the intelligence community. Disclosure of classified information about an individuals employment by the CIA has the potential to damage the national security in ways that range from preventing that individuals future use in a covert capacity, to compromising intelligence-gathering methods and operations, and endangering the safety of CIA employees and those who deal with them, the indictment states.

http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/iln/osc/documents/libby_pr_28...

To show how fair DUers are, here is the link to the document from Fitzgerald's site, it would probably be helpful to you to read not only his press release but also the text of his press conference, it is very enlightening, more enlightening than freeperland headquarters even, lol.

67. You are full of it, if I may say so
Fact: None of her neighbors, who the Wilsons socialized with regularly, knew she was CIA. This was confirmed by Fitz.
Fact: The Vanity Fair article came out long after the traitors you seem to worship outed her.
Can you be fair? Doubt it.

He divorced his wife before he met Valerie. And why that even matters . . .

Oh I get it, we are assassinating Joe Wilson's character. Sorry, had to get my brain in a repukelican mindset. It's hard for me to do that swift boating.

74. No one has been indicted because Bush is a traitor to his Country
No one has been indicted for outing her because Bush declassified her covert status and blew the cover on her efforts to track WMD's in Iran. Bush also blew the cover of her front company Brewster Jennings.

Bush Directed Cheney To Counter War Critic
By Murray Waas, National Journal
National Journal Group Inc.
Monday, July 3, 2006

President Bush told the special prosecutor in the CIA leak case that he directed Vice President Dick Cheney to personally lead an effort to counter allegations made by former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV that his administration had misrepresented intelligence information to make the case to go to war with Iraq, according to people familiar with the president's interview.

Bush told prosecutors he directed Cheney to disclose classified information that would not only defend his administration but also discredit Wilson.

Bush also told federal prosecutors during his June 24, 2004, interview in the Oval Office that he had directed Cheney, as part of that broader effort, to disclose highly classified intelligence information that would not only defend his administration but also discredit Wilson, the sources said.

But Bush told investigators that he was unaware that Cheney had directed I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the vice president's chief of staff, to covertly leak the classified information to the media instead of releasing it to the public after undergoing the formal governmental declassification processes.

75. Novak: Rove was a source in outing Plame
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060712/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/c...

WASHINGTON - Columnist Robert Novak said publicly for the first time Tuesday that White House political adviser Karl Rove was a source for his story outing the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame.

In a column, Novak also says his recollection of his conversation with Rove differs from what the Rove camp has said.

"I have revealed Rove's name because his attorney has divulged the substance of our conversation, though in a form different from my recollection," Novak wrote. Novak did not elaborate.
