They're reaching the National Enquirer/Washington Times stage now, where real journalists will not work for them, no matter what they pay, because they are a resume-killer. During the 1980s, the Enquirer and Globe and the rest started hiring business journalists at $100K, more than double what they could get in the business press. The theory was that these guys were used to digging, knew how to uncover secrets and so on. Turns out that these skills were not particularly useful in establishing the existence of little men from Mars and 90 year old grannies having babies.

So most of them quit or got canned within a couple of years. Leaving it on their resume was almost certain to lose them future jobs, so a lot of them pretended they had freelanced for that period. But in many cases, their cover had been blown years before.
