I can't quite comprehend how your post is responding to mine, but I think I agree anyway.

I ask for no sympathy because I am a straight white rich male, member of the oppressor class, yet I wish to not be included in the class of people the natives smirk at when we finally get our comeuppance. As we are so clearly going to get. I will just strive to do the best I can. My personal mission is not only to be the guy my dog thinks I am, but also to be able to, on my death bed, tell my daughter I tried my damnedest to make the world a good place for her.

And we whiteys will never, never, never pay off our debt to the natives of this geography, as far as I am concerned. I know this, all of the whiteys I care for know this, and my daughter will know this when the time is right. I will not ignore the smirks and giggles, I will join them, and hope that our mother sees me as I see myself.

Just for the record, I oppose the death penalty everywhere, including in the U.S. But this form seems especially heinous.

20. Well...

..lets see....first we have to go through the ritual of condemning ourselves and pointing out any bozo's in the West who advocate intolerant thinking (even though by and large we Americans, and modernist in general, don't pay any heed to nutcase religious law of the sort adhered to in far too much of the Islamic world). Then we must compare stoning innocent women to any number of bad things the US or West in general has done or is doing. Then we must pretend that these barbaric practices are only anomalies and that most authorities in the Islamic world don't really believe in stoning girls convicted of adultery, the death penalty for homosexual acts, murdering apostates, etc, (even though Shariah law is generally interpreted to call for precisely those things).

After we've covered all those bases, we can then nearly guiltlessly oppose stoning a woman to death - but we can not make any comparisons between our idea of a decent society and anyone elses. We are not perfect, therefore who are we to condemn the idea of living by a heinous, backward body of religious law?

And for the the culturally sensitive record, I detest Jerry Fallwell, Pat Buchanan, Dobson - the whole damn lot of them. But thankfully, while these nuts still have far too much influence, we in the US, the West in general, and the modern world have reasonably secular/progressive parties to keep these fanatics in check. I thank my own personal God for the US Democratic Party each and every day for keeping our own Talibanish types in their box.
