Hitler's followers can be explained more easily than Bush's followers.
After all, Hitler had been in battle. He had received medals for his service in WWI. On top of that, he was a great speaker with lots of passion, however misplaced. So, it is not too difficult to now see why so many German people followed him. I suppose he also kept telling them they were winning the war?

However, it is more difficult to understand why so many people follow George W Bush? Why would they trust him on anything? He had shirked his duty in Vietnam and evidence suggests he deserted the Texas Air National Guard. He had failed at every venture he had attempted - always backed by the money of his Daddy's friends. On top of that, he was a worse speaker than his father, who spoke in broken sentences.

Nonetheless, Junior has maintained a following of something between 30% and 40% thru all the disaster of his Presidency. Through all the lies. Through the spying. Through the torture. Through more lies. Through his profligate spending and giving away the people's wealth to all his wealthy friends. Through an unnecessary war and incompetence too much to catalog. Still they follow him? With Hitler, one could rationalize why so many people followed him. But with Dubya, it is a puzzle.

1. I think it's a form of mass hysteria
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 04:29 PM by Canuckistanian
I think for a lot of them, it's almost a cult-like experience. And the utter denial of ANY faults is a purely defensive mechanism.

Dubya is so tied into their worldview, they can't let even a crack of doubt appear.

Sometimes, this is carried to extremes. /obvious off

2. Hitler didn't have this:
the greatest mass marketing and persuasion device ever invented.

Television.

Decades ago, researchers found there's a very high correlation between heavy tv watching -- particularly violent tv and police dramas -- and authoritarian attitudes, including support for conservative politicians. It's called "hostile world syndrome" and it's the bedrock of the GOP message: "terra, terra, terra".

4. TV news and advertising propaganda
The people are easy to fool. That's why political TV ads win over merit everytime here.

5. First of all, the 30 - 40% figure is HOGWASH
And the hogs are squeaky-clean and polished up real good. There's been a LOT of "hogwashing" done by BushCo's pollsters.

7. In Germany's Defense
They were also Dealing with the sanctions from the Treaty of Versailles (sp), Extreeme inflation, High Unemployment etc. Not years of prosperity. Hitler did much to improve German society from an economic point of view, and instilled pride in a people who had suffered defeat in the "Great War." As a African American no less (only significant because I'm trying to put myself in their shoes) I can at least understand the psychology behind the Idol-Worship of Hitler by the German people. But this...........

8. True. At least there was some rationality to the hero worship
Hitler received from the German people, which makes our kool-aid drinkers even more baffling to understand.

12. He didn't waste it.
He pawned it and pocketed the money, along with his cronies. These criminals have looted and pillaged the national treasury and a broad swath of public resources. And they're nowhere near done.

13. They weren't that good. Getting other countries to bomb them,
getting their men killed in the disastrous invasion of Russia and the aftermath of defeat by the allies was just as disastrous as what the Bushlers are doing here. Also, even though they created factory jobs by building munitions, war hardware, ships and airplanes, the pay wasn't as good as under the old system and workers had to compete with their version of immigrants driving the wages down, the slave labor from the concentration camps.

It's just that things were so bad under the crushing terms of the Versaille Treaty and attempting to recover from WWI, things seemed better under the Nazis. They didn't forsee the disastrous consequences to come.

11. Hatred Feuled by Propaganda of the "Left"
Just listen to a right winger define the left, then ask them where they get that info from. Always from the same sources. They are misinformed and too emotionally weak to admit it.
