FOUR DOLLAR gasoline predicted within a week.
I just heard on WBBM-AM, 780 Chicago that experts are predicting four dollar regular unleaded in the area by next week.

That would be over a dollar spike from what we're paying here.

6. I wish we knew the real reason...
In my area, it's still at $3.19, which is bad enough. I remember the days when gas was $1.29 nation-wide. :-(

15. Welcome to DU - I remember it being under a dollar
I think I remember 60 cents a gallon at one point, but I'm sure some of the older folk will remember it much cheaper.

Here, at least at the station nearest my house, the gas inside the city of Pittsburgh hovers between 2.75 and 2.85. Luckily we don't drive much. I fill up maybe once a month at most. Usually less than that.

which most can't afford nowadays.

* said today he would do something about the high cost of gas if he could do something.

All he would need to do is threaten the oil companies - bring the prices down voluntarily or I will institute price controls. * lies.

It was probably way underpriced in the 90's -- and part of the reason we're so damnably dependent on cheap gas now.

Americans want cheap gas, a home they can call their own, and football on Sunday.

$4.00 a gallon is the stuff riots are made of. I can't imagine anyone around here putting up with $4.00/gallon unless there is some kind of massive strike against oil refineries, whether natural or unnatural.

What are they thinking...?

I remember getting all worked up over prices when they were $2.25 a gallon. The talking heads were all saying that if gas hit $3 a gallon, that would be the flashpoint, so Bush and his friends wouldn't let that happen.

Guess the talking heads were wrong.

I think people just have frustration fatigue.

59. My guess would be that a price target of $7 a gallon before
November, 2006. Be aware that, if Dems re-take both houses of Congress in November, that will be a sort of "bloodless revolution."

A real revolution, on the other hand, would see petroleum producers and distributors nationalized. Not sure what the price point would have to be for that to happen.

Are you sure it was $4.00, not $3.00? $3.00 is bad enough but $4.00 will really freak everyone out.

How high will we go when the hurricane's start hitting? :wow:

edit to add - I know it is above $3.00 many places. We are back to close to that where I live.

I only bought enough to get out of the city.

I saw some stations that were $3.30. I wouldn't be surprised if its more downtown. Are there even gas stations downtown? So, $4.00 at the most expensive station in Chicago doesn't seem like a long stretch to me if prices go up steeply.

14. Prices hit $3.05 here, for the first time since RIGHT after Katrina.
They hit $3.05 for maybe two days after Katrina. Everyone took a deep breath, and understood, and felt the price increase would be temporary.

So what on earth is the excuse for $3.05 now? Local right-wing talk radio told me yesterday that it was because North Korea fired missiles.

What in the living...? Seriously?

So what could be the reason they'll float for $4.00? Clearly, the oil execs are testing to see what the market will bear. As long as there are no riots in the streets when gas is $3.05, I guess they'll push it just a little bit further.

When will Americans say, "ENOUGH"?

People already reminisce about how "cheap" gasoline was a year ago when it was over $2. Keep it at one price for some time and 50 cents less will seem like a bargain to people who can't seem to remember how cheap it was a few years ago.

... was December of 2003, when local (Cincinnati) prices were $1.28/gallon.

$1.28!! Can you imagine...? And it was only three years ago.

Since then, it's been a steady increase. Goes up, comes down... but never as low as $1.28. Up... down a little... up some more... until we all forget the last threshold.

If you know *for certain* that gas prices will rise to $4 then you should:

1: Buy as much gas as you can today while it is under $3.
2: Wait
3: Sell it for $4 after it rises
4: Profit.

Simple, no?

32. Gasoline Co-Ops
Just after Katrina, I saw a few news reports about the increasing popularity of "Gasoline Co-Ops," so someone definitely had this idea years ago.

When gas was just over $1.00 a gallon, farmers (mostly) got together, purchased a tractor-trailer tanker, bought up the gas and sold it at cheap prices to their members. While we're all paying $3.00+, these smart individuals are still paying 2000 prices.

More power to them. How could you organize something like this? Although it would have made a lot more sense if communities started doing this five or six years ago.

Yesterday, we had to drive over to another town about 45 miles away mostly on interstate and divided hyway. people were flying around us, not just cars, but huge dual wheel trucks, big Lincoln suxs and Cadilac sux.
I could just see their gas gage falling, when those people start hurting may then there'll be some kind of protest, but, I guess they aren't hurting yet to be able to drive like that.

37. I smell Karl Rove's scent all over this...
See, if the corporate media is telling the masses that gas will increase to $4 within a week, then all the people will buy gas NOW before the gas prices increase. Then the gas companies can say they increased the price because the demand increased--supply and demand and all that jazz.

They're generating their own demand here to disguise their price gauging. Sounds pretty Rovian to me.

$3.244 for the Chicago area

that's the highest in the last three years, including last Aug/Sept, immediately after Katrina.

that, of course, means the highest EVER

EVER

it's why I bought a diesel last year

national averages for the last three years:

http://www.chicagogasprices.com/retail_price_chart.aspx

low: $1.44, Dec, 03
high: $3.08, right after Katrina
now: $2.92

gas in Chicago has gone up 24 cents in the last month, btw

64. I wouldn't mind $4.00 per gallon so much....
If we could at least get some green stamps.....or some of those nifty matching tea glasses with the glass pitchers, like my parents used

66. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!! And I just got my fam out of our commuting situation.
My wife now works from home- PURE telecommuting. And I have a ten minute drive to school.

Sorry, ChimpCo. No more outrageous sums of cash for you from me.
