Why does this matter?

Because it means he's not planning to run again.

Of course how much the candidate weighs should be irrelevant, just as how tall he is and how much hair he has shouldn't matter. But we all know that it does matter, and I'm quite sure that Al Gore knows it matters.

In 2000, he was notably fit and trim. The fact that he hasn't made an effort to get back to that shape now tells me that he's not planning to run for the presidency in 2008. He may change his mind, and I'll be watching his physical appearance for a clue to his intentions.

I loved his speech, but I want him to run. I'll happily vote for him if he does, just as I did in 2000, but it's now clear to me that, at least right now, he's not planning to run.

So, sadly, it doesn't really matter how presidential he looks to you or me.

28. Some serve by not running. If Al backs another Howard Dean in 2008...

and Dean and Kerry back that person - that will be service of a tremendous nature. I think Dean purposively emphasized that by taking the reigns of the DNC he was forever giving up Presidential aspirations. I think you have to give up the aspirations to be taken seriously. I am not being cynical here - just saying that anytime anyone speaks publically everyone is watching and listening for why doing so is in that person's interest and that makes what they say immediately suspect.

The core truth here is that celebrities don't accomplish the things that really matter in this world - they just get the attention. I would love to have a bulky or skinny, balding man (or woman) be the next President of the US. I am so, so, so sick of charming (which is a verb meaning 'to manipulate' rather than an adjective).

Welcome back. Finally, a real man has stood up to the plate. Maybe these five years of virtual exile have strengthened him. How a person deals with setbacks is the indication of his or her character. Gore has struggled. Let's hope he can keep standing up to Bush and fascism as he did today. I said I never would, but this speech has changed my mind -- I will support this man for the presidency again provided he continues to fight for our rights with the integrity and courage he showed today. In his effection and speaking style today. I listened on Sirius C-Span channel,
and couldn't help but thinking of Kevin Nealon of SNL fame doing the character
who spoke in a style filling speaking gaps with subliminal suggestion.

Just got home in fact.

It was outstanding - more powerful than portrayed on the C-Span broadcast. I stopped at my son's house on the way home and he was watching a copy he had saved when I got there.

The speech was moving, there was more audience feedback than C-Span's cameras, and more importantly mikes, captured.

It was truly outstanding.

But mostly it said to me, "WHAT will we do when one of the wishy-washy choices being put forth gets the Democratic nomination, and the Republicans steamroller over him with another term by Bush or someone even worse?" (And don't think they won't try to lift that two-term-only business; they like Bush.)
