Gore layed out a 5 point plan to fight with
1. A bipartisan call for appointment of a special council

Republican as well as Democratic members of Congress should support the bipartisan call of the Liberty Coalition for the appointment of a special counsel to pursue the criminal issues raised by warrantless wiretapping of Americans by the President.

2. Whistleblower protections for officials

Second, new whistleblower protections should immediately be established for members of the Executive Branch who report evidence of wrongdoing -- especially where it involves the abuse of Executive Branch authority in the sensitive areas of national security.

3. Hearings on presidential power abuse

Third, both Houses of Congress should hold comprehensive-and not just superficial-hearings into these serious allegations of criminal behavior on the part of the President. And, they should follow the evidence wherever it leads.

4. Kill the PATRIOT act

Fourth, the extensive new powers requested by the Executive Branch in its proposal to extend and enlarge the Patriot Act should, under no circumstances be granted, unless and until there are adequate and enforceable safeguards to protect the Constitution and the rights of the American people against the kinds of abuses that have so recently been revealed.

5. Telecom companies should stop spying

Fifth, any telecommunications company that has provided the government with access to private information concerning the communications of Americans without a proper warrant should immediately cease and desist their complicity in this apparently illegal invasion of the privacy of American citizens.

Well, du'ers the clarion call has been made! Start yelling and making noise.

21. Hell, they said it minutes after the speech was over.
He could have skipped the criticism of Bush and went straight to the plan, and they'd still say he didn't have a plan. I think they have all this stuff on cue cards, and they just pick one when it's their turn to talk.

5. Thank you!
We need to stop worrying about 2008 and first DO WHAT GORE ASKED US TO DO!

Every single one of us needs to contact our Senators and Representatives, whether they are Democrats or Republicans, as well as any others who are influential, and tell them that we want these things to happen.

Gore clearly laid out a plan of action for us.

I wrote my Republican Congressman on the 26th of December. I have heard nothing from him. It is time to write again.

In another two weeks I'll write again. If I still don't hear anything, I'll start calling.

IT IS TIME TO GIVE THIS CONGRESS NO PEACE UNTIL THEY DO THEIR JOB.

6. I was just going to post something about this!
The ReTardlican spokesbitch Tracey Schmitt said this:

"Al Gore's incessant need to insert himself in the headline of the day is almost as glaring as his lack of understanding of the threats facing America," Schmitt said. "While the president works to protect Americans from terrorists, Democrats deliver no solutions of their own, only diatribes laden with inaccuracies and anger. "

No solutions? How's about a five point plan, BEE-YOTCH??

And how about someone getting Al's freekin' back for a change?

7. Fantastic post
Instead of just fantasizing about Gore being president, or griping about the media not sufficiently covering his speech, you've parsed the speech and laid out a practical roadmap. Let's write our reps and senators, as well as LTTE. (btw, you probably know this, but it's counsel, not council.)

15. Sent emails to all of my senators which are dems.
I also sent one off to my republican congressman. I told them all that if they would or could not stand for the 5 point plan then they needed to give up their seats to someone who will do so.

16. NSWBC Lauds the Recent Nonpartisan Speech by Al Gore
NSWBC Lauds the Recent Nonpartisan Speech by Al Gore & Calls for New Whistleblower Legislation

The National Security Whistleblowers Coalition applauds Mr. Gore for his nonpartisan speech, which very eloquently and sincerely expresses our core American values based on the notions of liberty and justice. This speech can by no means be characterized as ‘Liberal’ or ‘Conservative’, 'Democrat’ or ‘Republican’, but only as ‘Truly American.’ As stated by Mr. Gore, without whistleblowers the public would never know of the many abuses of constitutional rights by the government. Whistleblowers, Truth Tellers, are responsible for the disclosure that President George W. Bush ordered unconstitutional surveillance of American citizens. These constitutional lifeguards take their patriotic oaths to heart and soul: rather than complying with classification and secrecy orders designed to protect officials engaging in criminal conduct, whistleblowers choose to risk their livelihoods and the wrath of their agencies to get the truth out.

Today, in his specific recommendations, Mr. Gore advocated that “new whistleblower protections should immediately be established for members of the Executive Branch who report evidence of wrongdoing -- especially where it involves the abuse of Executive Branch authority in the sensitive areas of national security.” This statement is also in accord with Mr. Barr’s recent agreement in various media forums that national security whistleblower protection is desperately needed.

Sibel Edmonds, Founder & Director of NSWBC, stated: “We applaud the call by Liberty Coalition & Al Gore for congress to enact new legislation that would provide meaningful whistleblower protections, especially for those patriots who report abuses of Executive Branch authority in the sensitive areas of national security. Hundreds of national security whistleblowers, patriotic government employees, have brought to the public’s attention cases of agency wrongdoing only to find themselves fired, stripped of their security clearance, and/or deprived of meaningful work, simply because they were courageous and patriotic enough to place the security of our nation above their own career security and interests. Why should government employees have to choose between their livelihood and career, and fulfilling their highest duty of all: protecting the public’s interest? The answer is very simple, because our legislative branch has failed to provide these patriots with any protection.” Ms. Edmonds added: “Whistleblowers have served as a constant and valuable check on the federal government. Considering the fact that to perform its legislative & oversight functions, congress must depend on information from the executive branch, why is it that the congress refuses to provide a safe & protected channel to those who can provide the congress with information, thus enabling it to exercise its oversight responsibility?”

The NSWBC drafted model legislation on whistleblower protection that is currently being worked up for submission by several senate offices. The legislation will scrap the ineffective, cumbersome, and narrow Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989, and replace it with an act that provides substantial protections for whistleblowers in all areas of government. Presently, whistleblowers in law enforcement and intelligence agencies are excluded from even the meager protections of the WPA. The NSWBC model bill would criminalize retaliation for whistleblowing, provide for civil liability for adverse employment decisions made for protected disclosures, remove perverse incentives for the executive branch to assert secrecy privileges to defeat whistleblower litigation, and require a truly independent body to investigate whistleblower claims and rectify executive branch abuses.

Congress is currently considering two bills (HR1317 and S494) that allege to provide and extend protection to whistleblowers, but these bills are irretrievably flawed and will do more damage than good if passed. Most importantly, neither bill provides protection for law enforcement and intelligence employees. The very type of whistleblower who can save the country and its citizens from great harm by executive branch malfeasance, incompetence, fraud, and abuse are the same employees excluded from any whistleblower protection. These bills should not pass.

Professor William Weaver, NSWBC Senior Advisor said: “We praise Mr. Gore’s and Mr. Barr’s sentiments and statements and hope that those in Congress will see the wisdom of their former colleagues’ positions. When politicians as diverse in their views as Mr. Gore and Mr. Barr, come together on common ground and agreement to action, then we all must take note. Now is the time to act to provide substantial whistleblower protection so that executive branch activities remain accountable to the Congress and the public.”

About National Security Whistleblowers Coalition
National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC), founded in August 2004, is an independent and nonpartisan alliance of whistleblowers who have come forward to address our nation’s security weaknesses; to inform authorities of security vulnerabilities in our intelligence agencies, at nuclear power plants and weapon facilities, in airports, and at our nation’s borders and ports; to uncover government waste, fraud, abuse, and in some cases criminal conduct. The NSWBC is dedicated to aiding national security whistleblowers through a variety of methods, including advocacy of governmental and legal reform, educating the public concerning whistleblowing activity, provision of comfort and fellowship to national security whistleblowers suffering retaliation and other harms, and working with other public interest organizations to affect goals defined in the NSWBC mission statement. 17. Republicans (chuckling): "Hehe, Gee, for a moment there we thought . . .
. . .that Gore might propose that they actually DO something."

---------------------------
Sorry Al, I'm delighted you're starting to get it, but we don't need five point plans (or three point or ten point plans).

We cannot continue to behave as if our constitutional democracy is operational. It is not. You of all people should know what happens when you behave as though an electoral system is operational when it is not.

The executive branch is a criminal operation run by the Bush syndicate. They are aided and abetted by powerful fascists in Congress. Their henchmen are invading the Judiciary. Our only choice is to go after the criminals and drive them from power.

When we demand a special counsel or investigations, we sustain the pretense of their legitimacy -- the pretense that they are subject to our influence. It is time to deal in reality. We know all we need to know to prosecute and drive them from power for:
  • Torturing (violation of 18 USC Sec. 2441--War Crimes)

  • Terrorizing all 300 million of us with the most colossal bomb threat in history -- mushroom clouds over our cities in 45 minutes (violations of 18 U.S.C. Section 844(e) Bomb threat, 300 Million Counts; or 18 USC Section 35 Imparting or Conveying False Information -- Bomb Hoax)

  • Spying on Americans (violation of 50 USC Sec. 1809--Unauthorized Surveillance)

Like the child who knew the emperor had no clothes, you don’t need to be a constitutional scholar to recognize such flagrant crimes and abuse of power. You don't need a high school diploma to know that the absolute power they wield is never freely given to a leader; it is only taken by deception or force.

The public doesn't need any more reports; they just need their leaders to publicly declare the truth.

The PLAN our leaders need is simple. Oppose Them at Every Turn. Open Their Mouths and Tell the Truth. Accuse the Perpetrators and Demand Punishment. Reject the fascist fantasies they invoke to convince us their crimes are not crimes.

  • Telling the truth means calling crimes, crimes. No hedging. What we know doesn't "virtually" compel a conclusion. Absolute truths must not be obscured with qualifications. It is lunacy to claim Bush's actions are anything BUT crimes.

  • Rejecting their fascist fantasies means banishing them from rational discussion. Their fantasies are NOT ideas to be "argued on the merits." Their fantasies have no place in the "marketplace of ideas." We don't argue for or against intelligent design, we just toss it out of our science classes. We won’t legitimize their fascist fantasies by arguing against them, we just toss them out of the realm of reason (and reject anyone -- like Alito -- who promotes fascist fantasies)

  • Accusing the perpetrators and demanding justice means just that. We make public accusations with the absolute certainty our knowledge of the facts gives us. When the powerful commit crimes, they must be removed from power and punished. We will fight for the immediate Impeachment of Bush and Cheney and indictment of their co-conspirators.

Gore's call for candidates to make the Bush Syndicate crimes an issue in every race is on track, but a campaign promise to demand the appointment of a special counsel doesn't have the power to grab people.

We need candidates to demand the Impeachment of Bush and Cheney. Accusing the Bush Syndicate of their crimes and promising to lead the fight to Impeach would not just grab the base; it would grab white males from across the political spectrum who revel in accusation and punishment.
