NBC News ups commitment to investigative journalism

Thu Jun 29, 2006 2:07am ET

By Paul J. Gough

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - NBC News will dramatically expand its investigative unit in the latest of a wave of changes since Steve Capus ascended to the presidency of the news division.

NBC News said Wednesday that the news division will double the number of producers working in the Investigative Reporting Unit. The unit's senior investigative correspondent is Lisa Myers, but other NBC News correspondents will work with the unit, too.

The number of producers in the unit will go from the four working with Myers to about 10 in the initial ramp-up. The unit's new producers will come from elsewhere at the network, though it isn't been ruled out that more will be hired later.

The award-winning unit contributes to "NBC Nightly News," "Today," "Dateline NBC" and MSNBC and CNBC. It started in 2002 under Myers and senior producer Jim Popkin.

14. I'd tell you what they're going to be... But, I'd get banned, this thread
would be locked, and I know better.

This is a respectable family type site.

2. First up on the list...Natalie Holloway, then George Smith
I have sinking feeling that their 'investigative' definition is going to take the form of solving crimes.

3. Oh, great, more tabloid crapola
"Dateline" seems to be more interested in rehashing old criminal cases featuring uxoricide than anything else, although their bit on ambushing pedophiles was top notch. Having the one guy strip was great theater.

I've never seen them take on the rich and powerful, though, the way "60 Minutes" has. Until they're willing to do that, they won't be worth watching most of the time.

5. We'll see ...
I am also reluctant to trust this supposed change. News organizations know more than anyone that it is far more cheap (and hence, profitable) to have two partisan sycophants screaming talking points at each other and call it "fair and balanced" than do the hard work of digging up actual facts.

I hope it's a positive sign. But, y'know, "fool me once."

16. Taking on MySpace is taking on Murdoch which is taking on Fox. Is
that all there is?

The word is that Murdoch owns MySpace.

9. They didn't think to do it after 9-11, but now they plan to do it when
they THINK the Dems might be taking the house?

I guess it will be 6 investigators on Dem politicians while 3 cover missing white girls, and leave 1 to keep an eye on the administration.

10. I guess I don't understand the news biz...

What is the role of a "producer" and "correspondent"?

Why are there 10 producers for every correspondent?

and if their commitment is to having more investigative journalism...

WHY IN THE HECK DON'T THEY HIRE ANY JOURNALISTS? REPORTERS? INVESTIGATORS?

Huh?
